Greg Welch
Gregory John Welch (born in 1964 in Campsie, Sydney), known as Greg Welch, is an Australian triathlete. He is known for having won "The Grand Slam", which includes the ITU Triathlon World Championships (1990), The Ironman World Championship (1994), the ITU Duathlon World Championships (1993) and the Long Course Triathlon World Championship (1994). Greg was an ambassador to the UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) in 2000. Sian Welch is an American former triathlete. Career She has been married since 1993 to former Australian professional triathlete Greg Welch. In 1994, she won the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon in San Francisco. In November 1996, she came in third in at the Cross Triathlon World Cup in Hawaii. In 1997 she became national triathlon champion on the short distance. In 2000, she ended her pro career - three months after her husband Greg announced his retirement. Ironman Hawaii 1997 In October 1997, she and her compatriot Wendy Ingraham delivered a thrilling duel for fourth place on the final stretch of the Ironman Hawaii , as the two were dehydrated and exhausted overturned and could only crawl to the finish on all fours. The World Triathlon Corporation (WTC) is a sports event promotion company owned by conglomerate Advance Publications, that produces the Ironman Triathlon, Ironman 70.3, the 5150 series of triathlon races, and other sports events. History In December, 1989, Dr. James P. Gills, with the help of Lew Friedland and David Yates, acquired and purchased the Hawaii Triathlon Corporation, owner of the Ironman Brand, for $3 million from Valerie Silk. Yates was the CEO from 1992 to 1998, followed by Friedland in the CEO role. With the Ironman brand, Gills established the World Triathlon Corporation with the intention of furthering the sport of triathlon and increasing prize money for triathletes.
