Shmuel Hadas
Shmuel Hadas (1931 – January 2010) was an Israeli diplomat. He was born to a Zionist Jewish family in Argentina. In 1953, he emigrated to Israel Aliyah (, ; he, עֲלִיָּה ''ʿălīyyā'', ) is the immigration of Jews from Jewish diaspora, the diaspora to, historically, the geographical Land of Israel, which is in the modern era chiefly represented by the Israel, State of Israel .... In 1964 joined the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs and was Ambassador to Bolivia from 1971 until 1975. In January 1986, he became the first Israeli ambassador to Spain, and in 1994 the first Israeli ambassador to the Holy See, a position he held until 1997. In 1997, he retired from diplomatic work and engaged in academic and cultural work. Israeli Jews or Jewish Israelis ( he, יהודים ישראלים, translit=Yehudim Yisraelim) are Israeli citizens and nationals who are Jewish through either their Jewish ethnicity and/or their adherence to Judaism. The history of the Jews in Argentina goes back to the early sixteenth century, following the Jewish expulsion from Spain. Sephardi Jews fleeing persecution immigrated with explorers and colonists to settle in what is now Argentina, in spite of being forbidden from travelling to the American colonies. In addition, many of the Portuguese traders in the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata were Jewish. An organized Jewish community, however, did not develop until after Argentina gained independence from Spain in 1816. By mid-century, Jews from France and other parts of Western Europe, fleeing the social and economic disruptions of revolutions, began to settle in Argentina.
