Shithouse (film)
''Shithouse'' (bowdlerized in marketing material as ''S#!%house'' and released in some territories as ''Freshman Year'') is a 2020 American coming-of-age comedy-drama film written, directed, and produced by Cooper Raiff, in his directorial debut. It stars Raiff, Dylan Gelula, Logan Miller, and Amy Landecker. The film was set to have its world premiere at South by Southwest in March 2020, but the festival was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The South by Southwest film competition nevertheless went ahead, and ''Shithouse'' won the Grand Jury Prize for Best Narrative Feature. It was released in the United States on October 16, 2020, by IFC Films. Plot Alex is a lonely college freshman struggling to adjust to college life, lying to his mother by inventing a best friend and girlfriend to conceal his lack of social life. Cooper Raiff
Cooper Michael Raiff (born February 11, 1997) is an American filmmaker and actor. He has received critical acclaim for his films '' Shithouse'' (2020) and ''Cha Cha Real Smooth'' (2022). He appeared on the 2022 ''Variety'' list of directors to watch. In August 2022, Raiff launched his production company Small Ideas. Early life A native of Dallas, Raiff attended the Greenhill School in Addison, Texas. He participated in school theatre productions and studied at the Dallas Young Actors Studio for 4 years. During his senior year, he wrote and performed in his first play. Raiff enrolled at Occidental College in Los Angeles and withdrew in 2019 to focus on film. Lawrence Jay Duplass (born March 7, 1973) is an American filmmaker, actor and author widely known for his films ''The Puffy Chair'' (2005), ''Cyrus'' (2010), and ''Jeff, Who Lives at Home'' (2011), made in collaboration with his younger brother, Mark Duplass. Metacritic is a website that review aggregator, aggregates reviews of films, TV shows, music albums, video games and formerly, books. For each product, the scores from each review are averaged (a weighted arithmetic mean, weighted average). Metacritic was created by Jason Dietz, Marc Doyle, and Julie Doyle Roberts in 1999. Rotten Tomatoes is an American review-aggregation website for film and television. The company was launched in August 1998 by three undergraduate students at the University of California, Berkeley: Senh Duong, Patrick Y. Lee, and Stephen Wang. Although the name "Rotten Tomatoes" connects to the practice of audiences throwing rotten tomatoes in disapproval of a poor stage performance, the original inspiration comes from a scene featuring tomatoes in the Canadian film ''Léolo'' (1992). ''Empire'' is a British film magazine published monthly by Bauer Consumer Media. The first issue was published in May 1989. Guerrilla filmmaking refers to a form of independent filmmaking characterized by ultra-low micro budgets, skeleton crews, and limited props using whatever resources, locations and equipment is available. Often scenes are shot quickly in real locations without any warning, and without obtaining filming permits. Independent filmmakers typically resort to guerrilla filmmaking because they don't have the budget or time to obtain permits, rent out locations, or build expensive sets.
