Shire Of Eidsvold
The Shire of Eidsvold was a local government area in the northern catchment of the Burnett River, Queensland, Australia. The shire covered an area of , and existed as a local government area from 1890 until 2008, when it amalgamated with several other shires to form the North Burnett Region. The major activities in the shire were beef cattle raising and forestry, and some irrigated properties existed along the Burnett and Nogo Rivers. Eidsvold was named after the Norwegian town of Eidsvoll, where the Norwegian declaration of freedom was signed in 1814. The Eidsvold district is the self-proclaimed ''Beef Capital of the Burnett'' and is a hub for the regional cattle industry. History The Eidsvold Division was proclaimed on 25 January 1890, initially with a chairman and six councillors, and the first meeting took place on 14 May 1890. Eidsvoll (; sometimes written as ''Eidsvold'') is a municipality in Akershus in Viken county, Norway. It is part of the Romerike traditional region. The administrative centre of the municipality is the village of Sundet. General information Etymology The first element is the genitive case of the word ''eid'' (Old Norse: ''eið'') and the last element is ''voll'' (Old Norse: ''vǫllr'') which means "meadow" or "field". The meaning of the word ''eid'' in this case is "a road passing around a waterfall". People from the districts around the lake ( Mjøsa) who were sailing down the river Vorma, and people from Romerike sailing up the same river, both had to enter this area by passing the Sundfossen waterfall. William Foster McCord (politician)
William Forster McCord (5 October 1837 – 14 April 1898) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography McCord was born at Clonturk, County Longford, Ireland, the son of Charles McCord and his wife Martha (née Foster). He was educated in Longford and travelled to the United States with his father before arriving in New South Wales in 1857. After his arrival he established Coonambula Station at Eidsvold in what had now become Queensland in 1863 and also acquired the Cania run. On 17 January 1871 he married Emilie Beatrice Wall and together had three sons and three daughters. Wuruma Dam
Wuruma Dam was constructed across the Nogo River in the upper Burnett River Catchment 48km north-west of Eidsvold for irrigation & town water supply for Eidsvold, Mundubbera and Gayndah. The dam wall is of mass concrete gravity construction which cost $5.3m to build and was completed in 1968. It has a surface area when full of 1,639 hectares (4,048 acres), and a capacity of 165,400 ML. The dam takes its name from a local indigenous word meaning brahminy kite. After reaching a low of 0.03% in September 1970, Wuruma Dam overflowed for the first time in February 1971. Since construction the dam has overflowed 9 times. It recorded its highest level of 142.64% capacity (3.74m over the spillway) in January 2013 as a result of heavy rains from ex Tropical Cyclone Oswald. SunWater is undertaking a dam spillway capacity upgrade program to ensure the highest level of safety for our dams is maintained. The spillway will be upgraded in the longer term. Abercorn is a rural town and locality in the North Burnett Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , the locality of Abercorn had a population of 46 people. Geography The Burnett River forms the eastern boundary of Abercorn. Three Moon Creek passes close to the town and across the locality into the Burnett River. The Burnett Highway passes through the locality but there is no direct access from the highway to the town; to get to Abercorn, the turn-off from the highway is onto Wuruma Dam Road at Cynthia. The Shire of Biggenden was a local government area located in the northern catchment of the Burnett River, Queensland, Australia, south-southwest of the regional city of Bundaberg. The shire covered an area of , and existed as a local government area from 1905 until 2008, when it amalgamated with several other shires to become the North Burnett Region. Primary production is the most significant industry in the region with beef and dairy cattle being predominant. Other agricultural pursuits include grain crops, piggeries, peanuts, citrus and timber. The area is also rich in minerals. Biggenden Mine is located from Biggenden along the Isis Highway. Gold, bismuth and more recently magnetite have been extracted from the mine.
