Abercorn is a rural town and locality in the North Burnett Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , the locality of Abercorn had a population of 46 people. Geography The Burnett River forms the eastern boundary of Abercorn. Three Moon Creek passes close to the town and across the locality into the Burnett River. The Burnett Highway passes through the locality but there is no direct access from the highway to the town; to get to Abercorn, the turn-off from the highway is onto Wuruma Dam Road at Cynthia. There is a state forest in the north of the locality extending into Kapaldo. Burnett River
The Burnett River is a river located in the Wide Bay–Burnett and Central Queensland regions of Queensland, Australia. Course and features The Burnett River rises in the Burnett Range, part of the Great Dividing Range, close to Mount Gaeta and east of Monto. It drains a basin covering 33,210 km² which is 1.9% of the total area of Queensland. The river flows generally south past Eidsvold and Mundubbera before heading east, adjacent to the townships of Gayndah and Wallaville before entering the city of Bundaberg. The river flows into the Coral Sea at Burnett Heads, roughly from Bundaberg. The river descends over its course. The Burnett River region is largely given over to growing sugar cane and small crops. North Burnett Regional Council
The North Burnett Region is a local government area in Queensland, Australia in the northern catchment of the Burnett River. Established in 2008, it was preceded by several previous local government areas with histories extending back to the early 1900s. It has an estimated operating budget of A$32 million. Wuruma Dam
Wuruma Dam was constructed across the Nogo River in the upper Burnett River Catchment 48km north-west of Eidsvold for irrigation & town water supply for Eidsvold, Mundubbera and Gayndah. The dam wall is of mass concrete gravity construction which cost $5.3m to build and was completed in 1968. It has a surface area when full of 1,639 hectares (4,048 acres), and a capacity of 165,400 ML. The dam takes its name from a local indigenous word meaning brahminy kite. After reaching a low of 0.03% in September 1970, Wuruma Dam overflowed for the first time in February 1971. Since construction the dam has overflowed 9 times. It recorded its highest level of 142.64% capacity (3.74m over the spillway) in January 2013 as a result of heavy rains from ex Tropical Cyclone Oswald. SunWater is undertaking a dam spillway capacity upgrade program to ensure the highest level of safety for our dams is maintained. The spillway will be upgraded in the longer term. Geography Monto is located on the Burnett Highway north-west of Brisbane and south of Rockhampton. The Gladstone–Monto Road intersects with the Burnett Highway in the town.
