Shipitsyno (russian: Шипи́цыно) is an urban locality (an urban-type settlement) in Kotlassky District of Arkhangelsk Oblast, Russia, located on the left bank of the Northern Dvina River from Kotlas. Municipally, it is the administrative center of Shipitsynskoye Urban Settlement, one of the three urban settlements in the district. Population: . History Shipitsyno was granted urban-type settlement status in 1950. Economy Industry There is a number of industrial enterprises in Shipitsyno, including the timber industry, concrete production, and mechanical works. Transportation There is a river harbor in Shipitsyno, and the Northern Dvina is navigable, but there is no passenger navigation. Types Of Inhabited Localities In Russia
The classification system of inhabited localities in Russia and some other post-Soviet states has certain peculiarities compared with those in other countries. Classes During the Soviet time, each of the republics of the Soviet Union, including the Russian SFSR, had its own legislative documents dealing with classification of inhabited localities. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the task of developing and maintaining such classification in Russia was delegated to the federal subjects.Articles 71 and 72 of the Constitution of Russia do not name issues of the administrative and territorial structure among the tasks handled on the federal level or jointly with the governments of the federal subjects. Northern Dvina River
The Northern Dvina (russian: Се́верная Двина́, ; kv, Вы́нва / Výnva) is a river in northern Russia flowing through the Vologda Oblast and Arkhangelsk Oblast into the Dvina Bay of the White Sea. Along with the Pechora River to the east, it drains most of Northwest Russia into the Arctic Ocean. It should not be confused with Western Dvina. The principal tributaries of the Northern Dvina are the Vychegda (right), the Vaga (river), Vaga (left), and the Pinega (river), Pinega (right). Etymology According to the Max Vasmer's ''Etymological Dictionary,'' the name of the river has been taken from the Western Dvina. Kotlas
Kotlas (russian: Ко́тлас) is a town in Arkhangelsk Oblast, Russia, located at the confluence of the Northern Dvina and Vychegda Rivers. Population: Kotlas is the third largest town of Arkhangelsk Oblast in terms of population (after Arkhangelsk and Severodvinsk) and an important transport hub. History The place was probably inhabited from ancient times, but was only granted official town status by the Provisional Government of Russia on June 16, 1917, when it was a part of Vologda Governorate. In 1918, the area was transferred to the newly formed Northern Dvina Governorate, and in 1924 the uyezds were abolished in favor of the new divisions, the districts (raions). Bereznik (russian: Березник), also known as Dvinskoy Bereznik (), is an rural locality (a settlement) and the administrative center of Vinogradovsky District of Arkhangelsk Oblast, Russia, located on the left bank of the Northern Dvina River, southeast of Kholmogorskaya railway station and from Arkhangelsk. Within the framework of municipal divisions, it serves as the administrative center of Bereznikovskoye Urban Settlement, the only urban settlement in the district. Population: ~4,000 (1968).
