Sheffield Volleyball Club
Sheffield Volleyball Club was founded in 1989 and in its short history has already had an illustrious past. Starting as a recreational volleyball side it quickly established itself as one of the major volleyball clubs in the country. Currently, the club runs multiple other teams alongside their Men's and Women's performance teams. Sheffield Volleyball Club also offer opportunities for junior players. Men's 1st team The men's 1st team are one of the most consistently successful teams in recent history in English Volleyball. The team is largely made up of students based at the performance programme of Sheffield Hallam University and relatively local talent. The team has always had a history of developing players from the university level and preparing them for potentially embarking on a professional career as a volleyball player overseas. Alex Porter
Alex Michael Porter (born 5 July 1980) is an English former volleyball player, commentator, and former Great Britain volleyball Captain. He also managed the Great Britain Men's Volleyball Team for the 2012 European Championship. He was a court side Expert Pundit at the 2012 Summer Olympics and Paralympics 2012 Games, covering the volleyball and sitting volleyball competitions matches held at Earls Court & ExCeL venue. During the games he joined up with Jonathan Legard to commentate for the BBC's live coverage of the Olympic Volleyball, including the men's Gold medal match. Sport In Sheffield
Sheffield has a long history of involvement in sport. Although cricket was the first organised sport, it has gradually been supplanted by football. Both the main two local football teams grew out of cricket teams. Sheffield can claim many firsts in football the most famous one being Sheffield F.C. being the world's first and oldest football club. Today it has a club in every major team sport in England. Sheffield became the first UK National City of Sport in 1995 and is now home to the English Institute of Sport (EIS). Today the city is home to two league clubs Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United, top flight ice hockey (Sheffield Steelers) and basketball (Sheffield Sharks) and a Premier League speedway team (Sheffield Tigers). Sheffield Hallam University (SHU) is a public research university in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England. The university is based on two sites; the City Campus is located in the city centre near Sheffield railway station, while the Collegiate Crescent Campus is about two miles away in the Broomhall Estate off Ecclesall Road in south-west Sheffield.
