Shanks Restaurant
Shanks Restaurant was a restaurant located in Bangor, Northern Ireland, that was awarded one Michelin star each year in the period 1996–2005. It became one of Northern Ireland's top restaurants, alongside Cayenne and Deane's. Shanks restaurant was opened in 1994, and was since owned and run by Millar and his wife, Shirley. The restaurant, designed by Terence Conran, had an unusual set up. The main restaurant is in the basement while the balcony is used for Al fresco dining. The ground floor is mainly used as reception area and bar. The Californian styled restaurant was located on the grounds of the Blackwood Golf Course. In April 1995 it was named Egon Ronay Newcomer of the Year for Ireland. Robbie Millar
Robbie Millar (26 April 1967 – 13 August 2005) was a head chef and restaurateur from Ballycarry in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. Millar started his career at restaurants in Corfu, Zurich and London before returning to Northern Ireland to work in Paul Rankin's ''Roscoff'' restaurant in Belfast. While at ''Roscoff'' he met his future wife Shirley, who managed the restaurant. In 1994 he opened Shanks Restaurant at the Blackwood golf centre, part of the Clandeboye Estate in Bangor. In 1996 the restaurant was awarded a Michelin Star, an award it held for ten years. Other awards include the Egon Ronay Guide Newcomer of the Year in 1995 and three Automobile Association rosettes. Terence Conran
Sir Terence Orby Conran (4 October 1931 – 12 September 2020) was an English designer, restaurateur, retailer and writer. Egon Ronay
Egon Miklos Ronay (24 July 1915 – 12 June 2010) was a Hungarian-born food critic who wrote and published a famous series of guides to British and Irish restaurants and hotels in the 1950s and 1960s. These guidebooks are credited with raising the quality of British cuisine offered in public eating places. Ronay also championed foreign cuisine for British diners. Early life Born in Budapest, Austria-Hungary, in 1915, he was the son of a prominent restaurateur. With the onset of World War II, he was conscripted into the Hungarian Army and served with the occupying forces after the First and Second Vienna Awards in southern Slovakia and northern Transylvania.
