Toxotes, Xanthi
Toxotes ( el, Τοξότες) is a settlement and a community in the Xanthi regional unit of Greece, part of the municipality Topeiros. It is located approximately 13.9 kilometers from Xanthi and 1 kilometer east of the river Nestos. In 2011, the population was 819 for the village, and 1,845 for the community. In 1981, the population of the settlement was around 2,198 inhabitants. In 1991, the number of people in Toxotes dropped to 802 inhabitants. The community consists of the settlements Toxotes, Agios Athanasios, Thalassia, Kosmiti, Megalo Tympano, Mikro Tympano, Poimni and Semeli. Pomaks
Pomaks ( bg, Помаци, Pomatsi; el, Πομάκοι, Pomáki; tr, Pomaklar) are Bulgarian-speaking Muslims inhabiting northwestern Turkey, Bulgaria and northeastern Greece. The c. 220,000 strong ethno-confessional minority in Bulgaria is recognized officially as Bulgarian Muslims by the government. The term has also been used as a wider designation, including also the Slavic Muslim populations of North Macedonia and Albania. Most Pomaks today live in Turkey where they have settled as muhacirs as a result of escaping previous ethnic cleansing in Bulgaria. Bulgaria recognizes their language as a Bulgarian dialect whereas in Greece and Turkey they self-declare their language as the Pomak language. Xanthi (, el, Περιφερειακή ενότητα Ξάνθης, Turkish: İskeçe) is one of the regional units of Greece. It is part of the Region of East Macedonia and Thrace. The capital is Xanthi. Together with the regional units Rhodope and Evros, it forms the geographical region of Western Thrace. Geography Xanthi borders the Bulgarian provinces of Smolyan and Kardzhali to the north, and the Aegean Sea to the south.
