Toxotes, Xanthi
Toxotes ( el, Τοξότες) is a settlement and a community in the Xanthi regional unit of Greece, part of the municipality Topeiros. It is located approximately 13.9 kilometers from Xanthi and 1 kilometer east of the river Nestos. In 2011, the population was 819 for the village, and 1,845 for the community. In 1981, the population of the settlement was around 2,198 inhabitants. In 1991, the number of people in Toxotes dropped to 802 inhabitants. The community consists of the settlements Toxotes, Agios Athanasios, Thalassia, Kosmiti, Megalo Tympano, Mikro Tympano, Poimni and Semeli. Xanthi (, el, Περιφερειακή ενότητα Ξάνθης, Turkish: İskeçe) is one of the regional units of Greece. It is part of the Region of East Macedonia and Thrace. The capital is Xanthi. Together with the regional units Rhodope and Evros, it forms the geographical region of Western Thrace. Geography Xanthi borders the Bulgarian provinces of Smolyan and Kardzhali to the north, and the Aegean Sea to the south. The regional unit of Kavala lies to the west, Drama to the northwest and Rhodope to the east. The Rhodope Mountains cover the northern part of the regional unit. Nestos ( ), Mesta ( ), or formerly the Mesta Karasu in Turkish (Karasu meaning "black river"), is a river in Bulgaria and Greece. It rises in the Rila Mountains and flows into the Aegean Sea near the island of Thasos. It plunges down towering canyons toward the Aegean Sea through mostly metamorphic formations. Thessaloniki–Alexandroupoli Railway
The Thessaloniki–Alexandroupoli railway is an about 440 km long railway in northern Greece connecting the Central Macedonian city of Thessaloniki with Alexandroupoli in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, via Serres.
