Seit Andres
Seit Andres is a Palauan politician and President of the Senate of Palau from September 1999 to December 2004. Andres was born on 4 May in Melekeok. He graduated from Xavier High School in Truk. He has an arts degree and a degree in economics from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. Andres worked in Palau Community Action Agency and as an administrative assistant for the Palau Port Authority. In the administration of President Lazarus Salii, he served as the chairman of an advisory task force on Compact of Free Association. He was an advisor to the Melekeok State constitutional convention, and he served in the Melekeok State legislature and the Melekeok State Lands Authority from 1992 to 2000. In the elections of 1980, Andres was elected as a senator to the first Palau National Congress. He was re-elected multiple times, and represented the State of Melekeok. Senate Of Palau
The Senate of Palau is the upper house of the Palau National Congress (''Olbiil era Kelulau''). The Senate has 13 members serving four-year terms in multi-seat constituencies. No political parties exist. The most recent election was held on 3 November 2020. Membership The Constitution does not indicate the number of a members of the Senate. Every 8 years, the National Congress appoints a reapportionment commission to draw up and recommend a district map allocating seats in accordance with the population. Therefore, the number of senators may change as frequently as every 8 years. Any voter can challenge a reapportionment before the Palau Supreme Court. During the first legislature in 1981, there were 18 Senators, which was reduced to 14 in 1984. Melekeok State
Melekeok is a state of the Republic of Palau located on the central east coast of Babeldaob Island. The seat of government of the country, Ngerulmud, is located in the state. The state consists of long beaches, hills, steep ridges, rivers, and the largest and only natural freshwater lake in the Republic of Palau and Micronesia, Lake Ngardok. Political system The state of Melekeok, with population of less than 300, has an elected chief executive, governor. The state also has a legislature elected every four years. Palau National Congress
Palau has a bicameral legislature, the Palau National Congress (''Olbiil era Kelulau''), consisting of the House of Delegates and the Senate of Palau, which both sit at the capitol complex in Ngerulmud, Melekeok State. The House of Delegates has 16 members, each serving four-year terms in single-seat constituencies. The Senate has 13 members, also serving four-year terms in multi-seat constituencies. In the last elections, held in 2020, only non-partisans were elected; no political parties exist. The congress is called Olbiil Era Kelulau (“OEK”) in Palauan or “House of Whispered Decisions". General elections were held in Palau on 4 November 1980 to elect a President, Vice-President, Senate and House of Delegates. All candidates ran as independents. Haruo Remeliik won the election for President with 31.2% of the vote, whilst Alfonso Oiterong was elected Vice-President. Voter turnout was 80%. Isidoro Rudimch
Isidoro Rudimch (4 April 1942 – 31 August 1999) was a Palauan entrepreneur, politician and President of the Senate of Palau. Rudimch was born 4 April 1942 in Koror. He attended Xavier High School in Truk, and St. Joseph High School in Hilo and Chaminade College in Hawai'i. He was an entrepreneur in Koror. Rudimch was elected as a member of the Congress of Micronesia lower house, House of Representatives, in 1970s. Rudimch was a candidate for Vice President of Palau in the 1980 elections, but did not succeed. Rudimch was elected to the Senate of Palau four times, from January 1985 until his death. Lazarus Salii
Lazarus Eitaro Salii (17 November 1936 – 20 August 1988) was a politician from Palau. He served as the second elected President of Palau from 25 October 1985 until he committed suicide on 20 August 1988, amid bribery allegations. Salii was elected to the Senate of Micronesian Congress. He was involved in the Palau Constitutional Convention of 1978. After the Constitution took effect in 1981, he became an ambassador. As ambassador, he was given wide-ranging authority to negotiate with the U.S. ambassador. He was ambassador until 1984, when he became a senator, representing Koror in the Palau National Congress. When President Haruo Remeliik was assassinated on 30 June 1985, Salii was elected in August to finish his term of office (although Thomas Remengesau and then Alfonso Oiterong served in the interim).
