1980 Palauan General Election
General elections were held in Palau on 4 November 1980 to elect a President, Vice-President, Senate and House of Delegates. All candidates ran as independents. Haruo Remeliik won the election for President with 31.2% of the vote, whilst Alfonso Oiterong was elected Vice-President. Voter turnout was 80%. Haruo Remeliik
Haruo Ignacio Remeliik (1 June 1933 – 30 June 1985) was a politician from Palau. He served as the first President of Palau from 2 March 1981 until his assassination on 30 June 1985. He is buried at Kloulklubed in his home state of Peleliu. Remeliik was of mixed Japanese and Palauan descent. Early life Remeliik studied priesthood in Truk. Later he returned to Palau and became an associate judge. In 1968, he won a seat in Palau legislature and became vice speaker. In 1970 he was appointed as deputy district administrator for the Palau district of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. In 1978 he became a member and later also president of the constitutional convention. In 1980, he was elected as the first President of Palau, and he won re-election in 1984. Death Remeliik's killers remain unknown. Remeliik was shot in the driveway of his home by an unidentified gunman. Haruo Willter
Haruo Ngiraked Willter is a Palauan civil servant and politician, and former Minister of Administration of Palau responsible for public finances. Biography Willter served in multiple positions throughout the decades including several years in Koror as deputy director of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands (TTPI) office. He began his employment with the TTPI government in Guam in 1958, and spent years in finance and budget positions after the TTPI moved to Saipan. Willter was a delegate in the first 1979 Palauan constitutional convention, and also in the second 2005 constitutional convention. He was Minister of Administration in the government of Palau in the early 1980s, from to 1981 to October 1985 during the presidencies of Haruo Remeliik and Alfonso Oiterong. Koror
Koror is the state comprising the main commercial centre of the Republic of Palau. It consists of several islands, the most prominent being Koror Island (also ''Oreor Island''). It is Palau’s most populous state. History In the oral tradition of Palau, Koror is one of the children of Milad, and thus occupies an important position in traditional belief. Ngarchelong is a state in Palau. Ngarchelong is at the northernmost tip of the island of Babeldaob. Only the state of Kayangel is farther north. Kayangel
Kayangel (Ngcheangel) is the northernmost state of Palau north of Koror. The land area is about . The population is 54 (2015 census). History The state was colonized by Spain from the end of the 16th century until 1899 when the territory was sold to the German Empire. Airai
Airai, located on the southern coast of Babeldaob island, is the second-most populous state of Palau. It contains the country's chief airport, Roman Tmetuchl International Airport, and is connected by the Koror–Babeldaob Bridge to nearby Koror Island. Geography The state has an area of 44 km2 (17 mi2), and a total population of 2,455 Census, the second largest in the country. Ngardmau
Ngardmau is one of Palau's sixteen states and is located on the west side of Babeldaob between the states of Ngaraard and Ngeremlengui. Geography The total area of Ngardmau is . At the time of the 2015 census, 185 people lived in the state. There were 46 households situated in three hamlets: Ngetbong, Ngerutoi and Urdmau. The hamlets have no visible boundaries, but instead form one settlement. Ngardmau is located on the northwest coast of Babeldaob and includes the long drainage basins of the Diongradid and the Irur Rivers. Ngardmau is bordered on the south by Ngeremlengui and on the east by Ngiwal and Ngaraard. The coast is lined with a thick fringe of mangroves.
