See See Rider (band)
See See Rider were an indie rock group formed in East Kilbride, Scotland, and active between 1989 and 1992, and featuring former members of The Primitives and Felt. The band took their name from the Lead Belly song "C.C. Rider". History Originally formed in 1987 after Stephen Sands and May Rock Marshall had relocated to London, the band parted ways with their original guitarist and bassist before settling on a line-up in 1989: Lewis Chamberlain (vocals, bass), Stephen Sands (guitar), May Rock Marshall (vocals, guitar), and ex-Primitives drummer Pete Tweedie. The band signed to Wayne Morris's Lazy Records label, home of The Primitives and My Bloody Valentine, securing support slots on tours by both Lloyd Cole, The Jesus and Mary Chain and Birdland. The Mary Chain's Douglas Hart was drafted in to play on the band's early recordings, with debut EP "She Sings Alone" issued in March 1990, Steve Lamacq describing them as "darkly enticing". East Kilbride
East Kilbride (; gd, Cille Bhrìghde an Ear ) is the largest town in South Lanarkshire in Scotland and the country's sixth-largest locality by population. It was also designated Scotland's first new town on 6 May 1947. The area lies on a raised plateau to the south of the Cathkin Braes, about southeast of Glasgow and close to the boundary with East Renfrewshire. The town ends close to the White Cart Water to the west and is bounded by the Rotten Calder Water to the east. Birdland (band)
Birdland were an English rock band, active between 1988 and 1993. They are best known for their widely acclaimed debut single "Hollow Heart", which reached No. 1 on the UK Indie Chart. History Birdland were formed in 1988 in Birmingham, England by the brothers Robert (vocals) and Lee Vincent (guitar), who had previously released records and toured in the glam rock band Zodiac Motel (1984–1988). The other band members were Simon Rogers (bass) and Neil Hughes (drums). Birdland's debut single, "Hollow Heart", was released on Lazy Records. It reached No. 1 in the UK Indie Chart. The band generated a lot of attention in the British music press. Lush (band)
Lush were an English rock band formed in London in 1987. The original line-up consisted of Miki Berenyi (vocals, guitar), Emma Anderson (vocals, guitar), Steve Rippon (bass guitar) and Chris Acland (drums). Phil King replaced Rippon in 1991. They were one of the first bands to have been described with the "shoegazing" label. Following the death of Acland, the group disbanded in 1996. The group reunited for a short time between 2015 and 2016 with Berenyi, Anderson, King and Justin Welch. They toured and recorded an EP of new material. Elektra Records (or Elektra Entertainment) is an American record label owned by Warner Music Group, founded in 1950 by Jac Holzman and Paul Rickolt. It played an important role in the development of contemporary folk and rock music between the 1950s and 1970s. In 2004, it was consolidated into WMG's Atlantic Records Group. Phil King (musician)
Phil King (born Philip King on 29 April 1960 in London, England) is an English musician perhaps best known for being the bassist of Lush. From 2007 to 2015 he was the touring bass player/rhythm guitar player for The Jesus and Mary Chain having previously toured with the group from 1997 to 1998. Career Circa 1987 King played bass for Felt, Biff Bang Pow! and The Servants. Featuring on the former's '' Bubblegum Perfume'' compilation. He also fronted Apple Boutique that released a single 1987. He appeared playing drums in Primal Scream's 1987 music video for "Gentle Tuesday", the opening track of the group's 1987 album entitled ''Sonic Flower Groove''; chosen because of his haircut. The Servants
The Servants were an indie band formed in 1985 in Hayes, Middlesex, England by singer-songwriter David Westlake. The band was the original home of Luke Haines. The band’s ''Small Time'' album was well received on its 2012 release, more than twenty years after its 1991-recording. The belated release followed the inclusion of 1990’s '' Disinterest'' in ''Mojo'' magazine’s 2011 list of the greatest British indie records of all time. History Singer-songwriter David Westlake started the band in Hayes, Middlesex with school-friend Ed Moran. ''New Musical Express'' (''NME'') is a British music, film, gaming, and culture website and brand. Founded as a newspaper in 1952, with the publication being referred to as a 'rock inkie', the NME would become a magazine that ended up as a free publication, before becoming an online brand which includes its website and radio stations. As a 'rock inkie', ''NME'' was the first British newspaper to include a singles chart, adding that feature in the edition of 14 November 1952. In the 1970s, it became the best-selling British music newspaper. Steve Lamacq
Stephen Paul Lamacq (born 16 October 1964), sometimes known by his nickname Lammo (given to him by John Peel), is an English disc jockey, currently working with the BBC radio station BBC Radio 6 Music. Early life He attended The Ramsey Academy from 1976, which had been formed the previous year from two grammar schools. He was brought up in the Essex village of Colne Engaine. Early career He cites Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark's "wonderful" 1979 single "Electricity" as his inspiration to become a disc jockey, noting that he wanted to afford air time to similar, "curious" music. Prior to launching this career, he studied Journalism at Harlow College, Essex, and worked as a junior reporter at the ''West Essex Gazette''. Douglas Hart
Douglas Alexander Hart (born 2 May 1965) is a British musician and music video director. Career Hart was the first bassist and founding member of the Scottish band The Jesus and Mary Chain, and played with the group from 1984 to 1991. He is noted for wearing black sunglasses and usually playing with fewer than four strings on his bass guitar. In 1988, he branched out, releasing the solo acid house single "Speed Speed Ecstasy" using the name Acid Angels. While in the band, Hart started to direct music videos for other acts. He founded his own video company and has directed over 80 music videos. ''Melody Maker'' was a British weekly music magazine, one of the world's earliest music weeklies; according to its publisher, IPC Media, the earliest. It was founded in 1926, largely as a magazine for dance band musicians, by Leicester-born composer, publisher Lawrence Wright; the first editor was Edgar Jackson. The Jesus and Mary Chain are a Scottish alternative rock band formed in East Kilbride in 1983. The band revolves around the songwriting partnership of brothers Jim and William Reid. After signing to independent label Creation Records, they released their first single " Upside Down" in 1984.
