Seaton, Ontario
Seaton will be a community in north Pickering in Ontario, Canada. Seaton is bounded by West Duffins Creek to the west, Sideline 16 to the east, Highway 7 to the north, and the CP Rail line to the south; it abuts the communities of Green River, Whitevale, and Brougham. It has been devised by the provincial government since the 1970s. By the time of full build-out, the community is expected to include a population of up to 70,000 people and 35,000 jobs. Politics In the early 1970s, the provincial government expropriated and purchased approximately 8,100 hectares of land in north Pickering. These lands, known as the North Pickering Land Assembly, were acquired to develop a community of approximately 250,000. This community would serve the proposed federal international airport, which was to be located just to the north. Cornell, Ontario
Cornell is a new community village being developed in northeast Markham, Ontario and bounded by Highway 407, 16th Avenue, Ninth Line, and the Donald Cousens Parkway. The 2011 population of this area was 9,880. Adding Cornell North's 2,178 (from 16th Avenue to Donald Cousens Parkway) it had 12,058 residents. History Cornell was conceived in the 1990s planning process by the town of Markham. Unlike other Markham communities, Cornell is a planned community. One of the original settlers was Christian Reesor. He and his family settled in Cornell. Their original homestead was on Reesor Road. Uxbridge is a township in the Regional Municipality of Durham in south-central Ontario, Canada. Communities The main centre in the township is the namesake community of Uxbridge. Oak Ridges Moraine
The Oak Ridges Moraine is an ecologically important geological landform in the Mixedwood Plains of south-central Ontario, Canada. The moraine covers a geographic area of between Caledon and Rice Lake, near Peterborough. One of the most significant landforms in southern Ontario, the moraine gets its name from the rolling hills and river valleys extending from the Niagara Escarpment east to Rice Lake. It was formed 12,000 years ago by advancing and retreating glaciers (''see'' geological origins, below). Pickering Airport
The Pickering Airport Lands were expropriated in 1972 by the Government of Canada with the intention of building a second international airport to serve the city of Toronto, its metropolitan area, and the surrounding region known as the Golden Horseshoe in Ontario, Canada. The airport was planned to be set in the city of Pickering, Ontario, about east of Toronto Pearson International Airport. As of December 2019 no operator had been selected. In 2004, the estimated cost of building the airport was reported to be approximately $2 billion, and it was anticipated that, by 2032, it would be handling up to 11.9 million passengers annually. Brougham, Ontario
Brougham ( ) is a community within the northern part of the City of Pickering, in Durham Region of Ontario, Canada. Some of its lands are affected by plans to build the proposed Pickering Airport. There are concerns because some of its buildings are of architectural significance. There is one bus in the area; the 52 York University passes through with a stop at Brock Road. The population is about 150. The children go to school at Valley View Public School in its neighbouring town of Greenwood. It has slowly reduced in population and business as the 407 wound its way through in the early 2000s. It currently houses an Antique Restoration, Pickering Animal Shelter, Hot Tub Outlet and RV dealership, as well as a handful of historical buildings dating back to the Mackenzie Rebellion. Whitevale, Ontario
Whitevale, formerly Majorville, is a community located within the City of Pickering in Durham Region, Ontario, Canada. The city refers to the community as the "Hamlet of Whitevale". Pickering (2021 population 99,186) is a city located in Southern Ontario, Canada, immediately east of Toronto in Durham Region. Beginning in the 1770s, the area was settled by primarily ethnic British colonists. Duffins Creek
Duffins Creek is a waterway in the eastern end of the Greater Toronto Area in Ontario, Canada. The watershed of the Duffins Creek is part of the Durham Region (Uxbridge, Pickering and Ajax) and the York Region (Markham and Whitchurch-Stouffville). Etymology and names Augustus Jones, who surveyed the area for the Government of Upper Canada in 1791, states that the native ( Mississauga Anishinaabek) name for the stream was ''Sin-qua-trik-de-que-onk'', meaning "pine wood on side". The Ojibwe Mississauga name of the creek in modern orthography is ''Zhingwaatigotigweyaa-ziibi''. The French missionaries from Ganatsekwyagon, who reached the stream in 1670, called it ''Riviere au Saumon'', meaning the "Salmon River", because of a large number of salmon fish that spawned there. National Topographic System
The National Topographic System or NTS is the system used by Natural Resources Canada for providing general purpose topographic maps of the country. NTS maps are available in a variety of scales, the standard being 1:50,000 and 1:250,000 scales. The maps provide details on landforms and terrain, lakes and rivers, forested areas, administrative zones, populated areas, roads and railways, as well as other man-made features. These maps are currently used by all levels of government and industry for forest fire and flood control (as well as other environmental issues), depiction of crop areas, right-of-way, real estate planning, development of natural resources and highway planning.
