Sandøya is an island in Ålesund Municipality in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. The island was the namesake of the former Sandøy municipality. The highest point on the island is the tall hill ''Bustihaugen''. The island has ferry connections to Finnøya, Ona, and Orta. The historic Sandøy Church is located on this island. Møre og Romsdal (; en, Møre and Romsdal) is a county in the northernmost part of Western Norway. It borders the counties of Trøndelag, Innlandet, and Vestland. The county administration is located in the town of Molde, while Ålesund is the largest town. The county is governed by the Møre og Romsdal County Municipality which includes an elected county council and a county mayor. The national government is represented by the county governor. Name The name ''Møre og Romsdal'' was created in 1936. The first element refers to the districts of Nordmøre and Sunnmøre, and the last element refers to Romsdal. Ålesund () sometimes spelled Aalesund in English, is a municipality in Møre og Romsdal County, Norway. It is part of the traditional district of Sunnmøre and the centre of the Ålesund Region. The town of Ålesund is the administrative centre of Ålesund Municipality, as well as the principal shipping town of the Sunnmøre district. Ona, Sandøy
Ona is a village and an island group located in Ålesund Municipality in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. The tiny island of Ona and the larger island of Husøy are separated by a shallow wide waterway. The two islands are collectively referred to as ''Ona''. The islands are located northwest of the island of Sandøya. The historic village of Ona covers most of the tiny island of Ona. The highest point on Ona, the Onakalven cliff, is the site of the Ona Lighthouse, which was built in 1867. The lighthouse and the tiny island itself has become a well known tourist spot in Western Norway. Orta is an island in Aukra Municipality in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. The island lies midway between the islands of Harøya and Gossa in the Harøyfjorden. There are ferry connections from Orta to Sandøya and Finnøya (in Ålesund Municipality) and to Gossa (in Aukra Municipality). On 1 January 2020, the island of Orta and the small surrounding islets were administratively transferred to the neighboring Aukra Municipality. Sandøy Church
Sandøy Church ( no, Sandøy kyrkje) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Ålesund Municipality in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. It is located on the small island of Sandøya. It is one of the two churches for the Sandøy parish which is part of the Nordre Sunnmøre prosti ( deanery) in the Diocese of Møre. The white, wooden church was built in an octagonal design in 1812 using plans drawn up by an unknown architect. The church seats about 250 people. History The earliest existing historical records of the church date back to 1589, but it was an old, dilapidated building by that time. At that time, it was located on the eastern coast of the island of Sandøya and originally the church was an annex chapel to the main Aukra Church in the Aukra prestegjeld.
