Sandy Shellworth
Sandra "Sandy" Shellworth (December 18, 1944 – January 10, 2019) was an alpine ski racer from the United States. Born in Annapolis, Maryland, Shellworth was raised in Boise, Idaho, where her father, Eugene Shellworth was mayor (1961–66). A 1962 graduate of Boise High, she raced for Bogus Basin, the University of Colorado, and the U.S. Ski Team. Shellworth won the Roch Cup downhill in Aspen in 1967, and was the 1967 U.S. Champion in giant slalom at Missoula, but broke her leg hours later training for the downhill. Shellworth was the first woman from CU to participate in the Olympics; she competed in the 1968 Winter Olympics at Grenoble and finished 21st in the women's downhill at Chamrousse. Her best finish in a World Cup event was 12th in the downhill at Schruns, Austria, in January 1967. At the 1948 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz, Switzerland, the six alpine skiing events were held on Piz Nair from Monday, 2 February to Thursday, 5 February 1948. After these games, the giant slalom was added and the combined event was dropped as an Olympic medal event for four decades, until 1988. From 1956 through 1980, the combined continued as an FIS medal event for the concurrent World Championships, using the results from three events, conducted as a "paper race." Henri Oreiller of France earned a medal in all three events, with two golds and a bronze. Schruns
Schruns is a municipality in the Montafon valley (altitude 690 meters), in the Bludenz district of the westernmost Austrian state of Vorarlberg. To the west is the famous Zimba mountain, often called the "Vorarlberger Matterhorn," which is very popular among climbers and hikers. Geography The Litz river, a tributary of the Ill river flows through the town. A side valley, the Silbertal, stretches to the east of Schruns. The FIS Alpine Ski World Cup is the top international circuit of alpine skiing competitions, launched in 1966 by a group of ski racing friends and experts which included French journalist Serge Lang and the alpine ski team directors from France (Honore Bonnet) and the USA ( Bob Beattie). Aspen Mountain (often called by its former name of Ajax among locals) is a ski area in the western United States, located in Pitkin County, Colorado, just outside and above the city of Aspen. Situated on the north flank of Aspen Mountain (for which it is named), its summit elevation is above sea level. Aspen Mountain forms the end of Richmond Ridge, a long ridge that extends south at approximately to join the main spine of the Elk Mountains. Founded in 1946 by Walter Paepcke, Aspen was the first ski area venture of the Aspen Skiing Company.
