San Pietro Vernotico
San Pietro Vernotico ( Brindisino: ) is a town and ''comune'' in the province of Brindisi, Apulia, on the south-east coast of Italy. Its main economic activities are tourism and the growing of olives and grapes. It was the site of a substantial Messapian community . A few kilometers from the town there is the seaside resort of Campo di Mare, which is part of the municipality. History The origins of San Pietro Vernotico date back to the historical period before the Norman, the Ottons of Germany and the Saracen invasions in Salento. The first settlements were around the current church of San Pietro Apostolo, built by Basilian monks between the 8th and 9th century AD, in a pasture area. Documents of the Angevin-Aragonese period suggest that in the 12th century the village was a hamlet belonging to the County of Lecce. Church Of San Pietro Apostolo
The Church of San Pietro Apostolo is a church dedicated to St. Peter the Apostle in San Pietro Vernotico, in Apulia, Italy. The first settlements of the town were recorded around this church, between the VIII and the IX century A.D. History The present Church of San Pietro Apostolo dates back to the 16th century. In ancient times, however, it was inhabited by Basilian monks (330-379 AD). Indeed, it was rebuilt on a previous medieval building. From a document dated 1133, it’s believed that the Church dates back to around the year 1000, when the Basilian Fathers built a small church dedicated to the Apostle Peter in the hamlet of Venocio because, according to the legend, the Saint would have spent the winter in the village. Messapii
The Messapians ( grc, Μεσσάπιοι, Messápioi; la, Messapii) were a Iapygian tribe who inhabited Salento in classical antiquity. Two other Iapygian tribes, the Peucetians and the Daunians, inhabited central and northern Apulia respectively. All three tribes spoke the Messapian language, but had developed separate archaeological cultures by the seventh century BC. The Messapians lived in the eponymous region Messapia, which extended from Leuca in the southeast to Kailia and Egnatia in the northwest, covering most of the Salento peninsula. This region includes the Province of Lecce and parts of the provinces of Brindisi and Taranto today.
