San Marziale
San Marziale is a church building in the '' sestiere'' or neighborhood of Cannaregio in Venice. The church dates to 1133. The present church was rebuilt in 1693–1714 at the commission of Pietro Barbarigo, and reconsecrated in 1721. It contains works by Antonio Vassilacchi (L'Aliense) (''Resurrection''), Domenico Cresti (''il Passignano''), Tintoretto (one of the altar pieces ''Saint Martial in Glory with Saints Peter and Paul''), and Giulia Lama (four paintings including two of the Evangelists ''St Matthew'' and ''St Mark'').. The Scuola del Santissimo Sacramento commissioned the altar (1691-1704) in the chancel attributed to Tommaso Rues. He also sculpted the elaborate marble main altar, depicting ''Christ Ruler of World with Saints and Angels'' is dedicated to the ''Blessed Virgin of the Graces''. Sebastiano Ricci
Sebastiano Ricci (1 August 165915 May 1734) was an Italian painter of the late Baroque school of Venice. About the same age as Piazzetta, and an elder contemporary of Tiepolo, he represents a late version of the vigorous and luminous Cortonesque style of grand manner fresco painting. He was the uncle of Marco Ricci (1676 – 1730), who trained with him, and became an innovator in landscape painting. Early years He was born in Belluno, the son of Andreana and Livio Ricci. In 1671, he was apprenticed to Federico Cervelli of Venice. Others claim Ricci's first master was Sebastiano Mazzoni. In 1678, a youthful indiscretion led to an unwanted pregnancy, and ultimately to a greater scandal, when Ricci was accused of attempting to poison the young woman in question to avoid marriage. Madonna Dell'Orto
The Madonna dell'Orto is a church in Venice, Italy, in the ''sestiere'' of Cannaregio. History The church was erected by the now-defunct religious order the "Humiliati" in the mid-14th century, under the direction of Tiberio da Parma, who is buried in the interior. It was initially dedicated to St. Christopher, patron saint of travellers, but its popular name suggesting consecration to Holy Virgin comes from the following century, when an allegedly miraculous statue of the Madonna, commissioned for the Church of S. Maria Formosa but rejected, was brought to the Church from the nearby orchard ( ''orto'' in Italian) where it had languished. Tommaso Rues
Tommaso Rues (1636 – 1703) was a Baroque sculptor active mainly in Venice; he contributed many of the statues outside of the church of the Salute. His works can be seen in a number of other Venetian churches including the Redentore, San Pantalon, and San Clemente. Biography He was born in Bruneck in the Southern Tyrol to a local sculptor, but by the age of 14 arrived in Venice as apprentice to a tailor, but soon apprenticed to the wood carver Giovanni Hach. He worked with Hach for eight years, but then became one of a group of sculptors active at times under the leadership of the Flemish Josse de Corte, including Heinrich Meyring, Giovanni Bonazza, Michele Fabris (l’Ongaro), and Melchior Barthel.
