Samuel Bakewell
Samuel Bakewell (ca.1815 – 22 September 1888) was a wholesale grocer and politician in the young colony of South Australia. History Samuel was born in Leicester, England, and emigrated on the ''Superb'', arriving in South Australia on 11 July 1839. He joined the brothers John and Thomas Waterhouse's grocery business on the corner of Rundle and King William Streets (later Duhst & Biven's) opposite the Beehive Corner. Around 1850 he opened his own wholesale grocery, "China tea warehouse", in Hindley Street (then the premier retail area), and was financially successful. He was elected to the City of Adelaide seat in the South Australian House of Assembly and served from March 1860 to November 1862. He was a member of the Strangers' Friend Society. William Bakewell (Australian Politician)
William Bakewell (ca.1817 – 25 January 1870) was a solicitor and politician in the early days of the Colony of South Australia. History William was born at Whichton Lodge, near Shirleywich, in the parish of Weston-on-Trent, Staffordshire. As a boy he was employed by solicitors Christian & Co. of Liverpool, and emigrated in the ''Fairfield'', to Adelaide arriving in April 1839. He carried letters of recommendation from solicitor William Bartley, through which he obtained employment as a clerk in the office of Mann & Gwynne, to whom he was later articled. He was admitted to the Bar in 1848 and taken into partnership with his former employer as Bartley & Bakewell, whose business as solicitors became one of the largest and best-conducted in the city. ''The Border Watch'' is an Australian newspaper based in Mount Gambier, South Australia, as of October 2020 owned by TBW Today Pty Ltd. Edward Howard Bakewell
Edward Howard Bakewell (6 July 1859 – 31 March 1944) was a South Australian pastoralist, businessman and administrator. Born at North Adelaide, he was a son of Samuel Bakewell (ca.1815 – 22 September 1888), who arrived in South Australia in 1839, and his wife Eliza Hannah Bakewell (née Pye). He was among the earliest scholars at Prince Alfred College. On completing his education he joined the staff of the National Bank as a ledger-keeper, and after three years there he gained experience in the north of the State in flour milling and in the pastoral Industry. Pastoral interests The pastoral industry particularly, attracted his attention, and for more than 50 years he was closely associated with it. For many years he was managing director of the Willowie Land and Pastoral Association Ltd., which held large freehold and leasehold properties in the northern parts of South Australia and the Northern Territory. Thomas Greaves Waterhouse JP (22 January 1811, Conisborough,Conisborough is/has also been known as Conisbrough and Conisburgh. Yorkshire – 9 October 1885, London) was a prominent businessman, investor and philanthropist in early colonial South Australia arriving soon after the start of official settlement. Elizabeth Webb Nicholls
Elizabeth Webb Nicholls (21 February 1850 – 3 August 1943) was a key suffragist in the campaign for votes for women (also called ' suffrage') in South Australia during the 1890s. She took on several high-profile roles in the capital of South Australia, Adelaide and was President of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) of South Australia, one of the most prominent organisations in the successful campaigns which made South Australia the first of the Australian colonies to grant women the right to vote in 1894. North Adelaide is a predominantly residential precinct and suburb of the City of Adelaide in South Australia, situated north of the River Torrens and within the Adelaide Park Lands.
