Samar State University
Samar State University (SSU) is a public university in the Philippines located in the province of Samar. Its main campus is located in Barangay Guindaponan, Catbalogan. The university has three other external campuses: Mercedes Campus, Catbalogan; Paranas Campus, and Basey Campus. The university was first known as Samar State Polytechnic College until it was converted into a university with the merger of Wright Vocational School in Paranas, Samar and Samar Regional School of Fisheries based in Catbalogan. Catbalogan
Catbalogan, officially the City of Catbalogan ( war, Siyudad han Catbalogan; fil, Lungsod ng Catbalogan), is a 5th class component city and capital of the province of Samar, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 106,440 people. It is Samar's main commercial, trading, educational, financial and political center. The city is the gateway to the region's three Samar provinces. Catbalogan's patron saint is St. Bartholomew the Apostle whose feast day is August 24. Samar ( ) is the third-largest and seventh-most populous island in the Philippines, with a total population of 1,909,537 as of the 2020 census. It is located in the eastern Visayas, which are in the central Philippines. The island is divided into three provinces: Samar (formerly Western Samar), Northern Samar, and Eastern Samar. Samar, officially the Province of Samar ( war, Probinsya han Samar; tl, Lalawigan ng Samar), formerly named as Western Samar, is a province in the Philippines located in the Eastern Visayas region. Its capital is the city of Catbalogan. It is bordered by Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Leyte and the Leyte Gulf, and includes several islands in the Samar Sea. Paranas, Samar
Paranas, officially the Municipality of Paranas ( war, Bungto han Paranas; tl, Bayan ng Paranas), is a 2nd class municipality in the province of Samar, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 32,374 people. It was formerly known as Wright named after American Governor-General Luke E. Wright. Many of the townsfolk work or attend school in nearby Catbalogan City. Trade is also prevalent with Calbayog City farther north. Basey, officially the Municipality of Basey ( war, Bungto han Basey; tl, Bayan ng Basey), is a 1st class municipality in the province of Samar, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 56,685 people. On 8 November 2013, Basey was one of the places heavily devastated by Super Typhoon Haiyan, leaving more than 200 people dead. Etymology The town's name is pronounced "Basai" or "Basay", not "basÉY". This mispronunciation was propagated by American soldiers in the early days of the American colonial period.
