Saint Cross Church
The Saint Cross Church () is a church in Jingliao Village, Houbi District, Tainan, Taiwan. History The church was designed in the 1950s. In 1955, German priest Eric Jansen who was stationed in the village decided to build a Catholic church. Architecture Designed by German architect Gottfried Boehm, the church building consists of four parts, which are pyramid chapel, coned bell tower, basilica and holy shrine. Towers of the four parts were built with aluminum-covered cypress. At each of the tower tip lies a representative totem. The church features a dormitory and a kindergarten within the same compound. The church has also a small museum depicting the history of the church from its founding. Houbi District () is a rural district of about 22,108 residents in Tainan, Taiwan. History After the handover of Taiwan from Japan to the Republic of China in 1945, Houbi was organized as a rural township of Tainan County. Tainan (), officially Tainan City, is a Special municipality (Taiwan), special municipality in southern Taiwan facing the Taiwan Strait on its western coast. Gottfried Boehm
Gottfried Boehm (; born 1942) is a German art historian and philosopher. Life Boehm studied art history, philosophy and German in Cologne, Vienna and Heidelberg. He obtained his ''Promotion'' (doctorate) in philosophy in 1968 and his ''Habilitation'' in 1974 in art history. From 1975 to 1979 he taught art history at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum. In 1979 he was made professor of art history at the Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen. In 1986 Boehm moved to the University of Basel, where since 2005 he has also been director of the Swiss national research project "Eikones / NCCR Iconic Criticism". Taiwan has a Christian minority, making up about 3.9% of its population. Roughly half of Taiwan's Christians are Catholic, and half Protestant. Due to the small number of practitioners, Christianity has not influenced the island nation's Han Chinese culture in a significant way.
