Saint-André Parish, New Brunswick
Saint-André is a civil parish in Madawaska County, New Brunswick, Canada. For governance purposes it is entirely within the town of Grand Falls, which is a member of the Northwest rural district. Before the 2023 governance reform, a small area along the Saint John River was part of the town of Grand Falls, with the remainder forming the incorporated rural community of Saint-André, itself formed in 2006 by the merger of the village of St. André and the local service district of the parish of Saint-André. Origin of name The parish takes its name from the Roman Catholic ecclesiastical parish. History Saint-André was erected from Saint-Léonard Parish in 1907. The Canadian province of New Brunswick is divided by the ''Territorial Division Act'' into 152 parishes, units which had political significance as subdivisions of counties until the Municipalities Act of 1966. Parishes still exist in law and include any municipality, rural community, or regional municipality within their borders. They provided convenient boundaries for electoral districts and organising delivery of government services for some time after 1966 but were gradually supplanted for such purposes by local service districts (LSDs), which better represent communities of interest. Local governance reforms scheduled for 1 January 2023 will abolish the local service district as a unit of governance but this will not affect the existence of civil parishes. Grand Falls is a civil parish in Victoria County, New Brunswick, Canada; the legal name in French is Grand-Sault, the only parish with different English and French names. For governance purposes it is entirely within the town of Grand Falls, which is a member of the Northwest Regional Service Commission. Prior to the 2023 governance reform, the town of Grand Falls was much smaller in area and the remainder of the parish formed the local service district of the parish of Grand Falls. The town of Grand Falls is treated separately from the parish in the ''Territorial Division Act'', the only instance of a municipality being separated from a parish. Drummond is a civil parish in Victoria County, New Brunswick, Canada. For governance purposes it is divided between the town of Grand Falls, the village of Drummond, and the local service district of the parish of Drummond, all of which are members of the Northwest Regional Service Commission (NWRSC). Origin of name The parish may have been named in honour of General Sir Gordon Drummond, former Governor General of the Canadas. Drummond was originally a neighbour of Gordon Parish before the erections of Denmark and Lorne Parishes. History Drummond was erected in 1872 from Grand Falls Parish. It included Denmark Parish. In 1875 the county line was altered and part of Drummond was transferred to Victoria County. In 1927 the area within the municipal limits of the town of Grand Falls was removed from Drummond. New Brunswick Route 17
Route 17, commonly known as the Stewart Highway, is long and runs from the Canada–US border in Saint-Leonard to Route 11 in Glencoe near Campbellton. Saint-Quentin and Kedgwick are other towns along the route. With the exception of those towns, the highway runs almost entirely through sparsely populated forest land. It is the only highway connecting northwestern New Brunswick with the province's north shore. It is named in honour of David A. Stewart. History Over several decades, Route 17 has received several upgrades, and new sections of road built, to improve safety. These upgrades have been designed to meet present-day standards, including flatter grades, creation of more passing lanes, upgrades to guard rail requirements and increased shoulder widths. New Brunswick Route 2
Route 2 is a major provincial highway in the Canadian province of New Brunswick, carrying the main route of the Trans-Canada Highway in the province. The highway connects with Autoroute 85 at the border with Quebec and Highway 104 at the border with Nova Scotia, as well as with traffic from Interstate 95 in the U.S. state of Maine via the short Route 95 connector. A core route in the National Highway System, Route 2 is a four-lane freeway in its entirety, and directly serves the cities of Edmundston, Fredericton, and Moncton. A 20-year project to replace the original 1960s-era two-lane Trans-Canada Highway with a four-lane freeway was completed on November 1, 2007.
