The Sacred Heart Cathedral is a religious building of the Catholic church that is located in South Tarawa on the atoll of Tarawa part of the island nation of Kiribati in Oceania. History Since 1966, the Sacred Heart Cathedral is the seat of the Bishop of the Diocese of Tarawa and Nauru (''Dioecesis Taravana et Nauruna'') which was created in 1982 to replace the Diocese of Tarawa and Nauru Funafuti of 1978 and Diocese of Tarawa of 1966. Teaoraereke
Teaoraereke (in Gilbertese, the narrow surface) is a town and settlement in South Tarawa of Kiribati. It is part of a nearly continuous chain of settlements along the islands of South Tarawa, which are now linked by causeways, between Bairiki and Buota (North Tarawa). Teaoraereke lies between Nanikai and Antebuka. 6,073 inhabitants live in Teaoraereke at the last census (2020), that means the third populated area in all Kiribati and the second of South Tarawa’s (TUC), but Bikenibeu. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Tarawa and Nauru (Latin: ''Dioecesis Taravana et Nauruna'') in Kiribati and Nauru is a suffragan diocese of the Archdiocese of Suva. It was erected as the Vicariate Apostolic of Gilbert Islands in 1897, with see in Tanaeang (on Tabiteuea) from 1936 to the end of 1950s, and later elevated to as the Diocese of Tarawa in 1966. There was a name change in 1978 and, in 1982, the diocese was split from the Mission ''sui iuris'' of Funafuti. The diocese currently has jurisdiction over all of Kiribati and Nauru. Koru Tito
Koru Tito (30 September 1960 – 7 August 2022) was an I-Kiribati priest of the Roman Catholic Church who was appointed bishop of the Diocese of Tarawa and Nauru on 29 June 2020 but was not consecrated a bishop before his death. Biography Tito was born on 30 September 1960 in North Tabiteuea, in the Gilbert and Ellice Islands of present-day Kiribati. He earned a diploma in education at the University of the South Pacific in Suva (1977–1979). He completed his philosophical and theological studies at the Pacific Regional Seminary in Fiji (1981–1985). Tito was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Tarawa and Nauru on 20 June 1987. He was the youngest of 10 siblings from his father (Tito) and mother (Ioana). Tito spent a year at St. Paul's National Seminary in Kensington, New South Wales (1990–1991).
