SS Waxholm (1909)
The ''Waxholm'' was a steam ship that was built, as the ''Brevik'', in 1909. She was intended for use on local services between Stockholm and the newly built residential area in Brevik on the island of Lidingö. Proven uneconomic on that relatively short service, she was acquired by the Waxholmsbolaget in 1913, renamed ''Express II'' and remodelled for use on that company's archipelago services. In 1964 she was renamed ''Waxholm'', but in 1978 she was badly damaged in a fire. Never repaired, she was scrapped in 1983. History The ''Brevik'' was built in 1909 by the Eriksbergs Mekaniska Verkstad in Gothenburg, Sweden. She was delivered on 13 July 1909 to the Fastighets AB Lidingö-Brevik, a property company responsible for developing the new suburb of Brevik on the island of Lidingö, in order to link that suburb to central Stockholm. Waxholmsbolaget
Waxholms Ångfartygs AB, commonly referred to as Waxholmsbolaget, is a shipping company owned by Stockholm county council and is responsible for the seaborne public transport in the Stockholm archipelago and Stockholm harbour. The company, which is mostly tax-funded, carried about 4.3 million travellers in 2003, covering a region from Arholma in north of the archipelago to Landsort in the south. The company owns 20 archipelago boats, and four boats for the inner-city Djurgården ferry line. The operation of the ships is handled by several contractors, some of whom also operate their own ships on behalf of Waxholmsbolaget. Eriksbergs Mekaniska Verkstad
Eriksbergs Mekaniska Verkstads AB was a Swedish shipbuilding company based in Gothenburg. It was founded in 1850 by Christian Barchman under the name ''Ericsbergs metall och tackjerns-gjuteri''. It delivered its last ship in 1979. History Introduction Founded in 1850 by Christian Barchman, the company originally worked with galvanization. The first shipyard wharf was opened in 1871, and two years later they delivered their first ship. In 1876 the company was transformed into a joint-stock company, and so the name was changed to ''Eriksbergs Mekaniska Werkstads AB''. In the beginning of the 1890s, the shipyard was still the smallest of the three wharfs that existed in Gothenburg. Steam Ship
A steamship, often referred to as a steamer, is a type of steam-powered vessel, typically ocean-faring and seaworthy, that is propelled by one or more steam engines that typically move (turn) propellers or paddlewheels. The first steamships came into practical usage during the early 1800s; however, there were exceptions that came before. Steamships usually use the prefix designations of "PS" for ''paddle steamer'' or "SS" for ''screw steamer'' (using a propeller or screw). Lidingö
Lidingö, also known in its definite form ''Lidingön'' and as ''Lidingölandet'', is an island in the inner Stockholm archipelago, northeast of Stockholm, Sweden. In 2010, the population of the Lidingö urban area on the island was 31,561. It is the seat of government of the Lidingö Municipality, Stockholm County. Vaxholm
Vaxholm is a locality and the seat of Vaxholm Municipality, Stockholm County, Sweden. It is located on the island of in the Stockholm archipelago. The name Vaxholm comes from Vaxholm Castle, which was constructed in 1549 on an islet with this name on the inlet to Stockholm, for defence purposes, by King Gustav Vasa. For historical reasons it has always been referred to as a ''city'', despite the small number of inhabitants, which as of 2010 total was 4,857. Vaxholm Municipality prefers to use the designation ''Vaxholms stad'' (City of Vaxholm) for its whole territory, including 64 islets in the Stockholm archipelago, a usage which is somewhat confusing. Ramsö
Ramsö is an island in the Stockholm archipelago in Sweden. Rindö island lies to its north, Tynningö island to its south-west, Skogsön island to its south-east, and the to its east. Administratively, it is in Vaxholm Municipality and Stockholm County. The island consists of three parts: Ramsö itself, Ramsöholm and Ramsöberg. Ramsöholm was separate from Ramsö until the 18th century, but is now joined to the rest of the island after the channel between the two was infilled. Ramsöberg began to be built up in the 1960s. Sandhamn
Sandhamn (Swedish for "Sand Harbour") is a small settlement in the central-peripheral part of the Stockholm Archipelago in central-eastern Sweden, approximately 50 km (30 mi) east of Stockholm. Sandhamn is located on the island Sandön ("Sand Island"), which is, however, colloquially referred to as Sandhamn. One of the most important natural ports in the archipelago with easy access to the Swedish capital, Sandhamn has been popular for pleasure boating since the late 19th century. Stavsnäs is a locality situated on the north east part of the island ''Fågelbrolandet'' in Värmdö Municipality, Stockholm County, Sweden with 810 inhabitants in 2010.
