SS Rotorua (1910)
SS ''Rotorua'' was a New Zealand Shipping Company Steamship, steam ocean liner and Reefer ship, refrigerated cargo ship that was built in Scotland in 1910 and sunk by a U-boat in 1917. She was not the only NZ Shipping Co ship to be called ''Rotorua''. There was also a ship that was launched in 1911 as ''HMAT Shropshire, Shropshire'' for the Federal Steam Navigation Company, transferred to the NZ Shipping Co fleet in 1936 and renamed ''Rotorua''. She was sunk by a U-boat in 1940. Building The NZ Shipping Co ordered ''Rotorua'' as a sister ship for , which William Denny and Brothers of Dumbarton had launched in 1909. Mrs George T Haycraft, wife of one of the NZ Shipping Co's directors, launched ''Rotorua'' on 9 July 1910. The ship was completed on 8 October. She was long, her beam was and her tonnages were and . ''The New Zealand Times'' was a New Zealand daily newspaper published in Wellington from 1874 to 1927. Background The newspaper was founded by Julius Vogel, who had had involvement with newspapers as an editor or owner since his goldfield days in Dunolly, Victoria, in 1856. Vogel was a correspondent for ''The Melbourne Argus'' before he edited the ''Dunolly Advertiser'', which became the ''Maryborough and Dunolly Advertiser''. Federal Steam Navigation Company
The New Zealand Shipping Company (NZSC) was a shipping company whose ships ran passenger and cargo services between Great Britain and New Zealand between 1873 and 1973. A group of Christchurch businessmen founded the company in 1873, similar groups formed in the other main centres, to counter the dominance of the Shaw Savill line controlled from London and the (Scotland-Dunedin) Albion line. There were seven initial directors: John Coster, chairman, George Gould Snr., (father of George Gould), John Thomas Peacock, William Reeves, Robert Heaton Rhodes, John Anderson, and Reginald Cobb (died 1873) representing the New Zealand Loan & Mercantile Agency. HMAT ''Shropshire'' (''His Majesty's Australian Transport''), originally SS ''Shropshire'', was a 11,911-ton vessel, built by John Brown and Company in Clydebank, Glasgow, for the Federal Steam Navigation Company.
