S.S. Lazio Fans
The S.S. Lazio fans are supporters of Italian football club Lazio. History The beginning The history of organized fan groups of S.S. Lazio, known in Italian as the ''Tifoseria Laziale'', began in the late 1960s when small groups of supporters filled the steps of Stadio Olimpico in Rome. They belonged to different groups which were ''Tuparamos, Eagles, Ultras, Vigilantes, NAB, CAST'' and ''Marines'', the latter consisting mostly of younger fans. The foundation of Eagles Supporters The early groups were not united and so in 1971, the first major ultras group was formed: Commandos Monteverde Lazio, also known as ''C.M.L. '74''. In October 1976, a new club was formed in order to unify the supporters from the north to south stands under the temporary name ''G.A.B.A. (Gruppi Associati Bianco Azzurri)''. Etymology It is erroneously claimed that "In Italian, literally means those infected by typhus disease, a reference to someone acting in a fevered manner." In reality, it comes from Ancient Greek "typhos," meaning smoke, as it was customary for spectators of the Ancient Olympic Games to celebrate the victories of their favourite athletes by reuniting around a bonfire. The confusion is due to the fact that both fever and smoke share the same etymological root, "typhos." ''Tifosi'' is used for a mixed gender or an all-male group; masculine singular is ''tifoso'', feminine singular ''tifosa'', feminine plural ''tifose''. Background This practice, long established in the major North American sports, is a recent development in football elsewhere, since squad numbers for specific players were not widely used until the 1990s. The 2002–03 Serie A (known as the Serie A TIM for sponsorship reasons) was the 101st season of top-tier Italian football, the 71st in a round-robin tournament. It was composed by 18 teams, for the 15th consecutive time from season 1988–89. The first two teams qualified directly to UEFA Champions League. Teams finishing in third and fourth position had to play Champions League qualifications. Teams finishing in fifth and sixth positions qualified to UEFA Cup (another spot was given to the winner of Coppa Italia). The bottom four teams were to be relegated in Serie B.
