Richmond (Quebec Provincial Electoral District)
Richmond is a provincial electoral riding in the Estrie region of Quebec, Canada, which elects members to the National Assembly of Quebec. It notably includes parts of the city of Sherbrooke as well as the municipalities of Val-des-Sources, Windsor, Saint-Denis-de-Brompton, Danville and Richmond. It was created for the 1890 election from a part of the Richmond-Wolfe electoral district. In the change from the 2001 to the 2011 electoral map, its territory was altered substantially. It lost most of its northern half, primarily to the new Drummond–Bois-Francs electoral district, and expanded southward to include a part of the city of Sherbrooke Sherbrooke ( ; ) is a city in southern Quebec, Canada. André Bachand (Progressive Conservative MP)
André Bachand (born December 8, 1961) is a Canadian politician, who represented the riding of Richmond—Arthabaska as member of the Progressive Conservatives from 1997 to 2003. When the PC Party was merged with the Canadian Alliance into the Conservative Party in December 2003, Bachand left the party and sat as an "Independent Progressive Conservative" until the 2004 election, and then retired from the House of Commons. Born in Quebec City, Quebec, Bachand has been an administrator, and a business executive. He was the mayor of Asbestos, Quebec, from 1986 to 1997, and was the Préfet of the MRC d'Asbestos from 1987 to 1997. 1890 Quebec General Election
The 1890 Quebec general election was held on June 17, 1890, to elect members of the 7th Legislative Assembly of the Province of Quebec, Canada. The incumbent Quebec Liberal Party Parti national coalition led by Honoré Mercier, was re-elected, defeating the Quebec Conservative Party, led by Louis-Olivier Taillon. A scandal and charges of corruption cut short Mercier's term of office. He was later cleared of all charges, but his political career was ended. Saint-Denis-de-Brompton is a municipality in the Canadian province of Quebec, part of the Regional County Municipality of Le Val-Saint-François, within the larger administrative region of Estrie. It is located approximately 145 kilometres east of Montreal. The municipality is located in a densely wooded area on the shores of Lake Brompton. History The region was still little frequented at the beginning of the 19th century when the township of Brompton was proclaimed in 1801 on the lands of the county of Buckinghamshire. The parish of Saint-Denis-de-Brompton was founded in this township in 1922. Its name pays homage to Father Joseph-Denis Bellemare, parish priest of Saint-François-Xavier-de-Brompton. Estrie
Estrie () is an administrative region of Quebec that comprises the Eastern Townships. ''Estrie'', a French neologism, was coined as a derivative of ''est'', "east". Originally settled by anglophones, today it is about 90 per cent francophone. Anglophones are concentrated in Lennoxville, Quebec, Lennoxville, home of the region's only English-speaking university, Bishop's University. Windsor, Quebec
Windsor is a town of 5,300 people, part of the Le Val-Saint-François Regional County Municipality in the Estrie region of Quebec, Canada. Windsor is perhaps best known for its ultra-modern Domtar fine paper plant. History Apart from the Abenaki Indian camps in this area in the 1600s, Windsor was unpopulated until the early 19th century, when Governor General Prescott granted a tract of land to Joseph Brown to thank him for his service to the Crown. Valcourt, Quebec (city)
Valcourt () is a town in Quebec in Le Val-Saint-François Regional County Municipality in the Estrie region of Quebec. The town is accessible via Quebec Route 222. Toponymy The town of Valcourt is enclaved by Valcourt (township). The name of Valcourt makes reference to the origin of this township. The origins of Valcourt go back to 1802, the year where the first inhabitants came to establish themselves in the township of Ely, named after the city in Great Britain. The first inhabitants were Loyalists, but by 1840 Canadiens began to arrive in the area. The first parish was created in 1856, and a civil entity in 1865 under the name of Township of Ely. The official name of Valcourt was not given until 1965, and took the name of the post office and the railroad station belonging to the Canadian Pacific Railway.
