Alfa Pendular
Alfa Pendular is the name of the flagship Pendolino high-speed tilting train of Portuguese state railway company CP. It connects the cities of Guimarães, Braga, Porto, Aveiro, Coimbra, Santarém, Lisbon, Albufeira and Faro, among others at speeds of up to . The trains were assembled in Portugal by ADtranz at the former Sorefame works at Amadora, based on contracting partnership between Fiat-Ferroviaria as the main contractor and ADtranz and Siemens as the main subcontractors. History Of Rail Transport In Portugal
The history of rail transport in Portugal dates from 28 October 1856, when Portugal's first railway line was opened between Lisbon and Carregado: the ''Companhia dos Caminhos de Ferro Portugueses''. The network was gradually expanded both south of the Tagus and to the north of the country, as well as in the metropolitan areas of Lisbon and Oporto and to Spain. In 1887 the Douro railway line was completed; also in 1887 the ''Sud Express'' from Lisbon to France operated for the first time. In 1892 a law was passed creating the Board of Directors of the ''CF Estado'' (State Railways), but most railways remain in private ownership albeit with greater state regulation and requirement for co-operation. REFER, Rede Ferroviária Nacional, EP (i.e. ''National Railway Network'') was the Portuguese Railway infrastructure manager, rail infrastructure manager. It was a state-owned company and was created to manage the Portuguese rail infrastructure, previously under control of Comboios de Portugal, CP, which became exclusively a train service operator. UIC Country Code
The UIC Country Code is a two digit-number identifying countries in which members of the International Union of Railways (UIC) are active. The UIC has issued numbering systems for rolling stock (UIC wagon numbers) and stations that include the country code. The values are defined in UIC leaflet 920-14. The country code had originally been designed as a company code but mainly as a consequence of the reorganisation of the rail sector in Europe changes were necessary. When the former UIC vehicle number became a vehicle register number (European Vehicle Number, EVN) issued by governmental organisations, the code was attributed to the countries.
