Metre Gauge
Metre-gauge railways are narrow-gauge railways with track gauge of or 1 metre. The metre gauge is used in around of tracks around the world. It was used by European colonial powers, such as the French, British and German Empires. In Europe, large metre-gauge networks remain in use in Switzerland, Spain and many European towns with urban trams, but most metre-gauge local railways in France, Germany and Belgium closed down in the mid-20th century, although many still remain. With the revival of urban rail transport, metre-gauge light metros were established in some cities, and in other cities, metre gauge was replaced by standard gauge. The slightly-wider gauge is used in Sofia. The Achensee Railway (german: Achenseebahn, ) is a long metre gauge railway running between Jenbach () and Seespitz () on Lake Achen in Tyrol (Austria). Within its length it rises some in height, with the steeper sections using the Riggenbach rack system. It is Europe's oldest cog railway which is still steam operated. History In 1886, Theodor Friedrich Freiherr von Dreifuss proposed to connect Jenbach to the Achensee. Despite concerns by villagers in the area, the proposal was supported by the monastery at Fiecht, which owned the Achensee and ran steam boats on the lake. Transport in Bulgaria is dominated by road transport, despite nearly half of all paved roads belonging to the lowest category of roads.
