BBC Radio Ulster ( ga, BBC Raidió Uladh) is a Northern Irish radio station owned and operated by BBC Northern Ireland, a division of the BBC. It was established on New Year's Day 1975, replacing what had been an opt-out of BBC Radio 4. It is broadcast on radio across Northern Ireland and parts of the Republic of Ireland, and on digital television services across all of Ireland. According to RAJAR, the station broadcasts to a weekly audience of 469,000 with a listening share of 17.8% as of September 2022. Overview It is the most widely listened to radio station in Northern Ireland, with a diverse range of programmes, including news, talk, features, music and sport. In the Q3 2021 RAJAR survey, the station had 517,000 weekly listeners, with total weekly listening hours of 5.5 million, beating its main local rivals (Cool FM, Downtown Radio, Downtown Country, U105, and Q Radio) on both of these metrics and, logically therefore, average weekly hours per listener (10.64). Jazz Club
A jazz club is a venue where the primary entertainment is the performance of live jazz music, although some jazz clubs primarily focus on the study and/or promotion of jazz-music. Jazz clubs are usually a type of nightclub or bar, which is licensed to sell alcoholic beverages. Jazz clubs were in large rooms in the eras of Orchestral jazz and big band jazz, when bands were large and often augmented by a string section. Large rooms were also more common in the Swing era, because at that time, jazz was popular as a dance music, so the dancers needed space to move. With the transition to 1940s-era styles like Bebop and later styles such as soul jazz, small combos of musicians such as quartets and trios were mostly used, and the music became more of a music to listen to, rather than a form of dance music. ''Across the Line'' is a programme on BBC Radio Ulster (92– 95 FM). It broadcasts Monday, 9.30pm to 11.00 pm, presented by Gemma Bradley. It is also known for its popular website at www.bbc.co.uk/atl. Support for Northern Ireland music and musicians in central to the Across the Line editorial brief. Blas, is an Irish-language magazine programme, broadcast each weeknight on BBC Radio Ulster, from 7.03 p.m. Blas focuses on news and stories which are of interest to an Irish-speaking audience, including sport, arts and literature, politics and current affairs. The programme focuses mainly on news and stories from Northern Ireland, but also covers stories from Republic of Ireland, and the Gaelic-speaking areas of Scotland. ''Evening Extra'' is the BBC's drive time news and current affairs radio programme in Northern Ireland. It is broadcast live on BBC Radio Ulster, BBC Radio Foyle and BBC Sounds on weekday evenings, from 4pm to 6pm. It is presented by Richard Morgan, Tara Mills and Declan Harvey. The programme provides a daily round-up of the day's main news and sports stories, as well as the latest breaking news. Programme origin Evening Extra was launched in 1996 as part of a wider station re-launch by Anna Carragher in light of the paramilitary ceasefires of 1994 and a need to alter the tone and range of the news output. Derry, officially Londonderry (), is the second-largest city in Northern Ireland and the fifth-largest city on the island of Ireland.
