Evening Extra
''Evening Extra'' is the BBC's drive time news and current affairs radio programme in Northern Ireland. It is broadcast live on BBC Radio Ulster, BBC Radio Foyle and BBC Sounds on weekday evenings, from 4pm to 6pm. It is presented by Richard Morgan, Tara Mills and Declan Harvey. The programme provides a daily round-up of the day's main news and sports stories, as well as the latest breaking news. Programme origin Evening Extra was launched in 1996 as part of a wider station re-launch by Anna Carragher in light of the paramilitary ceasefires of 1994 and a need to alter the tone and range of the news output. The first presenter was Sean Rafferty. As part of wider schedule changes in September 2019 Evening Extra was extended to fill two hours in the schedule, having previously been broadcast from 5pm - 6.30pm for many years. BBC Radio Ulster ( ga, BBC Raidió Uladh) is a Northern Irish radio station owned and operated by BBC Northern Ireland, a division of the BBC. It was established on New Year's Day 1975, replacing what had been an opt-out of BBC Radio 4. It is broadcast on radio across Northern Ireland and parts of the Republic of Ireland, and on digital television services across all of Ireland. According to RAJAR, the station broadcasts to a weekly audience of 469,000 with a listening share of 17.8% as of September 2022. Overview It is the most widely listened to radio station in Northern Ireland, with a diverse range of programmes, including news, talk, features, music and sport. BBC Radio Foyle
BBC Radio Foyle ( ga, BBC Raidió Feabhail) is a BBC Northern Ireland local radio station, serving County Londonderry in Northern Ireland. It is named after the River Foyle which flows through Derry, the city where the station is based. The station broadcasts from BBC's Northland Road studios on 93.1 FM in Derry. It was available on 792 kHz MW until 6 May 2021. There is also a small television studio based there used for interviews with the interviewee sitting in front of a CSO screen which normally has a live view of Derry. Since it broadcasts from a point close to the border between County Londonderry and County Donegal in the Republic of Ireland, it includes some coverage of the latter county. BBC Sounds
BBC Sounds is a Closed platform, walled garden streaming media and audio download service from the BBC that includes live radio broadcasts, audio on demand, and podcasts. The service is available on a wide range of devices, including mobile phones and tablets, personal computers, cars, and smart televisions. Media delivered to UK-based listeners does not feature commercial advertising. Service The BBC Sounds website replaced the BBC iPlayer, iPlayer Radio service for UK users in October 2018. An initial beta version of the BBC Sounds app was launched in June 2018, with both the new app and the iPlayer Radio app supported until September 2019, when the iPlayer Radio app was finally decommissioned in the UK. Declan Harvey
Declan Harvey (born 28 November 1983) is a journalist and presenter with BBC News. He anchors the BBC's flagship nightly television news programme in Northern Ireland, ''BBC Newsline'', and the daily radio drive time news programme, ''Evening Extra'', on BBC Radio Ulster. Early life Declan was born and grew up in Letterkenny, County Donegal, in the north-west of Ulster. He attended Scoil Colmcille and St Eunan's College. He moved to England to attend drama school aged 19. Early career Declan is a classically trained actor and holds a first-class honours degree in acting from Rose Bruford College. He worked for several years as a professional actor on stage and television, and voice-over artist. He holds an MA in Theatre Practices, specialising in voice. Anna Carragher
Anna Carragher (born 9 July 1948) is an Irish former broadcasting executive and television producer. From 2000 to 2006, she was Controller of BBC Northern Ireland. Early life and education Carragher was born on 9 July 1948 to Thomas Carragher and Eileen Carragher. Her father was a shipyard electrician and trade unionist, and Irish Labour councillor. Her parents were founding members of the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP), which formed in 1970. Carragher was educated St Dominic's High School, now called St Dominic's Grammar School for Girls, a Roman Catholic grammar school in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Her mother taught Maths at St Dominic's, and became the school's Vice-Principal in 1976. She studied English Language and Literature at Queen's University Belfast, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts (BA Hons) degree. Sean Rafferty
Sean Rafferty MBE is a Belfast-born, Northern Irish broadcaster, now best known for his work on BBC Radio 3. Early life Rafferty was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland and spent his childhood in Newcastle, County Down. He went on to study law at Queen's University, Belfast. Career Rafferty's original career was as an accountant. In 1969, he met the head of BBC Northern Ireland at a conference, and this meeting led to Rafferty joining the BBC as a researcher. He went on to become a regular presenter on the BBC Northern Ireland news television programmes, ''Scene Around Six'' and ''Inside Ulster''. In 1990, he fronted the first chat show on BBC Radio Ulster, entitled ''Rafferty''. From 1994, he joined the morning radio news programme, ''Good Morning Ulster'', and the arts programme ''29 Bedford Street'', and the following year, he launched the drivetime news and current affairs programme on Radio Ulster, ''Evening Extra''. ''BBC Newsline'' is the BBC's national television news programme for Northern Ireland, broadcast on BBC One Northern Ireland from the headquarters of BBC Northern Ireland in Ormeau Avenue, Belfast. As well as being available via all multi-channel outlets in Northern Ireland (including via Sky channel 101), the programme can be accessed by the rest of the United Kingdom (along with all other regional BBC news programmes) on the BBC iPlayer, or alternatively on Sky channel 973. Broadcasting House, Belfast
Broadcasting House, Belfast is the headquarters of BBC Northern Ireland and operates many of its broadcasting services. The building is located on Ormeau Avenue in Belfast city centre, at the junction with Bedford Street. Public tours of the building are available. History The building was designed by George James Miller of James Miller & Sons of Glasgow in 1936 and completed in 1938. BBC Broadcasting House in Belfast has many radio studios, some self-operated, some manned, used for the BBC's main local radio station in Northern Ireland – BBC Radio Ulster, as well as being used by the BBC for other radio productions.
