The R31 is a provincial route in the Northern Cape of South Africa that connects Kimberley with the Namibian border at Rietfontein via Kuruman and Hotazel. It is co-signed with the R360 between Askham and Andriesvale. Some sections of this road are gravel road. Route The R31 begins in Kimberley (Capital of the Northern Cape), south-west of the city centre, at an intersection with the N12 National Route. It begins by going north-north-west through the western area of Kimberley, meeting the R357 road at the next junction and the N8 National Route at the following junction. From the N8 junction in Kimberley, the R31 goes north-north-west for 31 kilometres, passing by the Wildebeest Kuil Rock Art Centre, to cross the Vaal River and enter the town of Barkly West, where it meets the southern terminus of the R374 road and passes through in a westerly direction. Askham, Northern Cape
Askham is a village in the Dawid Kruiper Local Municipality in the ZF Mgcawu District Municipality in the Northern Cape province of South Africa. Askham lies not far from the confluence of the mostly dry Molopo and Kuruman Rivers in the Red Kalahari Desert, about 200 km north of Upington at the junction of the R31 and the R360 roads. The village is located in the belt of the irrigated green land that surrounds the Orange River, as it flows North-West through the Kalahari toward the Namibian border and the Richtersveld area of Namaqualand. Askham is located in the southern Kalahari wilderness area on the Red Dune Route, where the dunes grow approximately 35m in height. The area was once home to the San Bushmen, Koranna and Nama people. Wonderwerk Cave
Wonderwerk Cave is an archaeological site, formed originally as an ancient solution cavity in dolomite rocks of the Kuruman Hills, situated between Danielskuil and Kuruman in the Northern Cape Province, South Africa. It is a National Heritage Site, managed as a satellite of the McGregor Museum in Kimberley. Geologically, hillside erosion exposed the northern end of the cavity, which extends horizontally for about into the base of a hill. Accumulated deposits inside the cave, up to in-depth, reflect natural sedimentation processes such as water and wind deposition as well as the activities of animals, birds, and human ancestors over some 2 million years. The site has been studied and excavated by archaeologists since the 1940s and research here generates important insights into human history in the subcontinent of Southern Africa. The R385 is a regional route in South Africa that connects Olifantshoek with Hopetown via Postmasburg and Douglas. Route The R385 begins south of Olifantshoek, at a junction with the N14 National Route. It begins by going south-east for 54 kilometres to the town of Postmasburg, where it intersects with the R325 Road. It continues eastwards for 50 kilometres to meet the R31 Road north of Lime Acres. At this junction, the R385 turns southwards and proceeds to enter Lime Acres. From Lime Acres, the R385 continues southwards for 63 kilometres to meet the N8 National Route at Campbell. Delportshoop is a town in Frances Baard District Municipality in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. It lies next to the Vaal River. The Harts River runs by closely. Early settlement It developed from a diamond-diggers’ camp. The public diggings were proclaimed in November 1871, a village management board was instituted in 1931, and municipal status attained in 1970. Name Delportshoop was originally called “Thomas Hope”, but later the name was changed to “Delport’s Hope” . The first Prosecutor was P.J. Marais. He farmed on Langberg in the region. Harts River
The Harts River ( af, Hartsrivier) is a northern tributary of the Vaal River, which in turn is the largest tributary of the Orange River (also known as the Gariep River, the largest river in South Africa). Its source is in the North West Province, but the greater part of its basin is located in the Northern Cape Province, which it enters a few kilometers downstream from the Taung Dam. The Harts forms a natural boundary for the Ghaap Plateau, located between the Harts River and the Kuruman Hills. Vaal River
The Vaal River ( ; Khoemana: ) is the largest tributary of the Orange River in South Africa. The river has its source near Breyten in Mpumalanga province, east of Johannesburg and about north of Ermelo and only about from the Indian Ocean. It then flows westwards to its conjunction with the Orange River southwest of Kimberley in the Northern Cape. Wildebeest Kuil Rock Art Centre
Wildebeest Kuil Rock Art Centre is a rock engraving site with visitor centre on land owned by the !Xun and Khwe San situated about 16 km from Kimberley, Northern Cape, South Africa. It is a declared Provincial Heritage Site managed by the Northern Cape Rock Art Trust in association with the McGregor Museum. The engravings exemplify one of the forms often referred to as ‘ Bushman rock art' – or Khoe-San rock art – with the rock paintings of the Drakensberg, Cederberg and other regions of South Africa being generally better known occurrences. Differing in technique, the engravings have many features in common with rock paintings. A greater emphasis on large mammals such as elephant, rhino and hippo, in addition to eland, and an often reduced concern with depicting the human form set the engravings apart from the paintings of the sub-continent.
