The village is located along the Sørfolda fjord, about south of the village of Nordfold and about northwest of the village of Røsvika. The historic Rørstad Church is located in the village, and worship services are held there twice each summer. The village area was located on a peninsula lying between the Nordfolda and Sørfolda fjords, just east of the uninhabited island, Prestmåsøya. Since boat transportation gave way to automobile transportation in the 20th century, the village became more remote. There are no road connections to Rørstad, but there are ferry connections from Røsvika in the summer. The permanent residents left the village in the late-1970s, but since then the area has been used for summer Holiday cottage A holiday cottage, holiday home, vacation home, or vacation pr ...

The new church was consecrated in 1665. The new wooden church was cruciform with a steeple above the centre of the church. In 1761, a new church was built at Rørstad to serve the whole Sørfold parish. The church was located along the he ...

Terminology varies among countries. In the United Kingdom this type of property is usually termed a ''holiday home'' or ''holiday cottage''; in Australia, a ''holiday house/home'', or ''weekender''; in New Zealand, a ''bach'' or ''crib''. Ferry
A ferry is a ship, watercraft or amphibious vehicle used to carry passengers, and sometimes vehicles and cargo, across a body of water. A passenger ferry with many stops, such as in Venice, Italy, is sometimes called a water bus or water taxi. Ferries form a part of the public transport systems of many waterside cities and islands, allowing direct transit between points at a capital cost much lower than bridges or tunnels. Ship connections of much larger distances (such as over long distances in water bodies like the Mediterranean Sea) may also be called ferry services, and many carry vehicles. History In ancient times The profession of the ferryman is embodied in Greek mythology in Charon, the boatman who transported souls across the River Styx to the Underworld. Speculation that a pair of oxen propelled a ship having a water wheel can be found in 4th century Roman literature "''Anonymus De Rebus Bellicis''". Though impractical, there is no reason why it could not work ...
