Rural Route 4 is the Missouri-based barbershop quartet that won the 1986 SPEBSQSA The Barbershop Harmony Society, legally and historically named the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America, Inc. (SPEBSQSA), is the first of several organizations to promote and preserve barbershop ... international competition. They are known for their signature costumes of matching overalls in keeping with the rural theme of their group in venues where formal attire is expected. Calvin's son, Wes Yoder, later replaced Don as the group's tenor until their formal retirement in 1994. Tenor
A tenor is a type of classical music, classical male singing human voice, voice whose vocal range lies between the countertenor and baritone voice types. It is the highest male chest voice type. The tenor's vocal range extends up to C5. The low extreme for tenors is widely defined to be B2, though some roles include an A2 (two As below middle C). The New Tradition
The New Tradition is the California Barbershop quartet that won the 1985 SPEBSQSA international competition. The name refers to an earlier quartet, the Grand Tradition, with the same lead and baritone. It is not to be confused with the New Tradition Chorus from Northbrook, Illinois. List Of Quartet Champions By Year
This article lists the Barbershop Harmony Society's international quartet champions by the year in which they won. Quartets can only win once, though up to two members may appear together in another quartet and compete again. In this manner individual singers may win multiple gold medals. Twenty men have won two or more gold medals. Five men have won three or more. Two men, Joe Connelly (musician), Joe Connelly and Tony DeRosa, have won four. Connelly sang with champion quartets Interstate Rivals (1987), Keepsake (quartet), Keepsake (1992), Platinum (quartet), PLATINUM (2000), and Old School (quartet), Old School (2011); and DeRosa with Keepsake (1992), PLATINUM (2000), Max Q (quartet), Max Q (2007), and Main Street (quartet), Main Street (2017). Interstate Rivals
The Interstate Rivals is the Barbershop quartet that won the 1987 SPEBSQSA international competition in Hartford, Connecticut. Formed in 1982, the Rivals won the Cardinal District championship that fall. The next summer at the international contest they placed tenth, followed by sixth, third, second-place finishes before winning in 1987. They sang and travelled widely, until they disbanded in August 1991. All four members went on to repeat gold medals with Keepsake, Gas House Gang, Marquis, Platinum and Old School. The members combine for a total of 11 gold medals between the four, all winning on just one voice part each.
