Rural Municipality Of Franklin
The Rural Municipality of Franklin is a former rural municipality (RM) in the Canadian province of Manitoba. It was incorporated on December 22, 1883. It ceased on January 1, 2015 as a result of a provincially mandated amalgamation with the Town of Emerson to form the Municipality of Emerson – Franklin. Geography The RM was located in the southeastern part of Manitoba, along the border between the province and the U.S. state of Minnesota. According to Statistics Canada, the former RM had an area of 953.34 km2 (368.09 sq mi). Population The 2006 Census reported a population of 1,768 persons. A rural municipality (RM) is a type of incorporated municipality in the Canadian province of Manitoba. Under the province's ''Municipal Act'' of 1997, an area must have a minimum population of 1,000 and a density of less than to incorporate as a rural municipality. Manitoba has 98 RMs, which had a cumulative population of 301,438 as of the 2016 Census. This is a decrease from 116 RMs prior to January 1, 2015, when municipalities with less than 1,000 people were directed by the provincial government to amalgamate with adjoining municipalities to comply with the ''Municipal Act''. Dominion City, Manitoba
Dominion City is an unincorporated community in the Municipality of Emerson – Franklin, Manitoba Canada. It is located in southeastern part of the province, approximately north of the Canada–United States border. Dominion City is served by Roseau Valley School. The community also has a pool, a museum, a bank, a credit union, a general store, a hockey rink, a curling club, and a nine-hole golf course. Historic buildings in Dominion City include All Saints Anglican Church, which is now used as the Franklin Museum. The original name of the community was Roseau, later Roseau Crossing. It changed to the current name in 1878 to avoid confusion with similarly-named communities, such as Roseau, Minnesota. The "City" was added in keeping with Crystal City and Rapid City. Kittson County, Minnesota
Kittson County is a county in the northwestern corner of the U.S. state of Minnesota along the Canada–US border, south of the Canadian province of Manitoba. As of the 2020 census, the population was 4,207. Its county seat is Hallock. History Evidence of occupation dating back 1800 years has been confirmed through archaeological expeditions done in the 1930s and 1970s around the burial mounds on the sand ridges in the eastern part of the county, which date to the Woodland Period. Evidence has been found that the Laurel, Arvilla, St. Croix, and Blackduck complexes were the area's early occupants. Rural Municipality Of Stuartburn
Stuartburn is a rural municipality (RM) located in the Eastman Region of Manitoba, Canada. It had a population of 1,629 according to the Canada 2006 Census. The municipality is named after the Ukrainian-Canadian village of Stuartburn within the RM, supposedly named for an early settler called William H. Stuart. History The first settlers to the area of current-day Stuartburn arrived in August 1896 from Ukraine. This first settlement consisted of 26 families, followed by other groups from Ukraine in subsequent months. The settlement expanded eastward and northward, and by the end of 1900, the number of settlers reached approximately 3000. The first Ukrainian Orthodox Church was built in the vicinity of Gardenton in 1897; and the first Ukrainian Catholic Church began construction in 1899 and completed in 1902 in the vicinity of Stuartburn. Rural Municipality Of Montcalm
Montcalm (french: Municipalité rurale de Montcalm) is a rural municipality (RM) in the province of Manitoba in Western Canada. The Canada 2016 Census reported a population of 1,260 persons, a decrease from the 1,309 reported in the 2011 Census. Geography The RM has an area of 469.41 km2 (181.24 sq mi). The Canada–United States border opposite Pembina County, North Dakota forms a small part of Montcalm's southern boundary; there is no direct road link between the RM and county. The Roseau River Anishinabe First Nation is situated between Montcalm and the neighbouring Municipality of Emerson – Franklin. Tolstoi, Manitoba
Tolstoi is a hamlet in the Municipality of Emerson – Franklin, Manitoba, Canada. It is located along Manitoba Highway 59 at the junction with Provincial Road 209, approximately south of Winnipeg and north of the Tolstoi Port of Entry at the Canada–United States border. History Tolstoi was founded by Ukrainian immigrants in the 1890s, one of the earliest Ukrainian settlements in western Canada. Once a thriving community, Tolstoi's population has declined dramatically in recent decades. Its current population is generally older, as most young people have left for jobs in Winnipeg. The community is served by a grocery store, Ukrainian Catholic and Ukrainian Orthodox churches. The Tolstoi Hotel and Bar closed in 2008. The Municipality of Emerson – Franklin is a rural municipality (RM) in the Canadian province of Manitoba. History The municipality was created on January 1, 2015 via the amalgamation of the RM of Franklin and the Town of Emerson. It was formed as a requirement of ''The Municipal Amalgamations Act'', which required that municipalities with a population less than 1,000 amalgamate with one or more neighbouring municipalities by 2015.
