Rome Express
''Rome Express'' is a 1932 British thriller film directed by Walter Forde and starring Esther Ralston and Conrad Veidt. Based on a story by Clifford Grey, with a screenplay by Sidney Gilliat, the film is a tale about a European express train to Rome carrying diverse characters, including thieves, adulterers, blackmail victims, and an American film star. The film won the American National Board of Review award for Best Foreign Film. ''Rome Express'' was remade as ''Sleeping Car to Trieste'' (1948). It was shot at the Lime Grove Studios in Shepherd's Bush. The film's sets were designed by the art director Andrew Mazzei, with the costume design by Gordon Conway. The Palatino Express or Rome Express is a historic express train operating between Paris, France, and Rome, Italy, since 1890. Under the name ''Rome Express'' the pre-war service operated daily until interrupted by the Second World War. The British film ''Rome Express'' (1932) derived its title and its setting from the train. The service was resumed after the war, and has operated with the name ''Palatino Express'' since 1969. Route The original ''Rome Express'' route operated from Calais-Maritime, a coastal railway station providing a direct connection between cross-channel ferries from England and the French railway network, via Paris, Aix-les-Bains, Modane, Turin, Genoa, Pisa, and Florence to Rome. On 21 January 1893 the route was changed to run via Marseilles, Nice, San Remo and Genoa, instead of via Mont Cenis and Turin. In 1897 the route reverted to Mont Cenis. ''Sleeping Car to Trieste'' is a 1948 British comedy thriller film directed by John Paddy Carstairs and starring Jean Kent, Albert Lieven, Derrick De Marney and Rona Anderson. It was shot at Denham Studios outside London. The film's sets were designed by the art director Ralph Brinton. It is a remake of the 1932 film ''Rome Express''. Plot The setting is almost entirely on a train travelling between Paris and Trieste after World War II. Two rather mysterious people, Zurta (Albert Lieven) and Valya (Jean Kent), are at ease in sophisticated society. Zurta steals a diary from the safe of an embassy in Paris while they are guests at a reception there, killing a servant who walks in on the robbery. Gordon Harker
William Gordon Harker (7 August 1885 – 2 March 1967) was an English stage and film actor. Harker was one of the sons of Sarah Elizabeth Harker, née Hall, (1856–1927), and Joseph Harker (1855–1927), a much admired set painter for the theatre for whom the ''Dracula'' character Jonathan Harker was named. Harker had a long career on the stage, from 1902 to the 1950s. Joan Barry (born Ina Florence Marshman Bell; 5 November 1903 – 10 April 1989) was a British actress, whose career straddled the development of talkies. Family She was daughter of Francis Marshman Bell, who went to Sydney, Cumberland County, New South Wales, and wife Norah Cavanagh. Biography Born in Carlisle, Cumbria, although some sources claim she was born three years earlier in London, Middlesex, she had her first role at the age of 15. Barry appeared at St James's Theatre, London when seventeen. She memorably dubbed the voice of Anny Ondra in the early Alfred Hitchcock thriller '' Blackmail'' (1929). Harold Huth (20 January 1892 – 26 October 1967) was a British actor, film director and producer. Biography Early life He was born in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, in 1892. He was a nephew of Eva Moore and a cousin of the actor Roland Pertwee. For the first eighteen years of his professional life, Huth worked in the motor business. Anthony Van Dyck
Sir Anthony van Dyck (, many variant spellings; 22 March 1599 – 9 December 1641) was a Brabantian Flemish Baroque artist who became the leading court painter in England after success in the Southern Netherlands and Italy. Gordon Conway (December 18, 1894 – June 9, 1956) was an illustrator and costume designer who designed for British films in the 1920s and 1930s. Notable films included ''High Treason'' (1929), ''Sunshine Susie'' (1931) and '' The Good Companions'' (1933). She worked closely with leading film producer Michael Balcon, and is credited with establishing the first specialist costume department in Britain's film studios in the early 1930s. Andrew Mazzei (1887–1975) was a French-born British art director who designed the sets for more than sixty films during his career. Mazzei began his career in the late 1920s during the silent era including on the futuristic ''High Treason''. By the 1930s he was working for Gainsborough Pictures, designing backdrops for the critically acclaimed train-set thriller ''Rome Express'' in 1932.
