Rome Bid For The 2020 Summer Olympics
Rome 2020 (Italian: Roma 2020) was a proposed bid for the 2020 Summer Olympics by the city of Rome and the Italian National Olympic Committee. Rome had previously hosted the 1960 Summer Olympics. The bid for the 2020 Games was withdrawn due to the lack of support from the Italian government. History The Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI) announced the selection of Rome as Italy's candidate city on May 19, 2010. Rome was selected ahead of Venice which was deemed unable to fulfill requirements set by the IOC for hosting the Games; among other things, it relied too heavily on venues outside the city, including in Treviso and Padua. The initial Rome proposal included a $61 million bid budget and a plan to utilize 70 percent of existing venues. Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo, who ran the 1990 FIFA World Cup, was asked to lead the bid committee, but turned down the offer. The 125th IOC Session took place at the Buenos Aires Hilton in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from 7 to 10 September 2013. On 7 September, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) elected Tokyo as the host city of the 2020 Summer Olympic Games. Wrestling was restored to the Olympic sports program for 2020 and 2024. The Rome bid for the 2024 Summer Olympics and Summer Paralympics was an attempt to bring the 2024 Summer Olympics to the city of Rome. On 21 September 2016, Rome withdrew its bid for the Games. Mario Monti, (born 19 March 1943) is an Italian economist and academic who served as the Prime Minister of Italy from 2011 to 2013, leading a technocratic government in the wake of the Italian debt crisis. Corrado Clini (born 17 July 1947) is an Italian politician and was the Italian minister of environment, land and sea (IMELS) in the Monti cabinet from November 2011 to April 2013. Baku 2020 ( az, 'Bakı 2020') was a bid for the 2020 Summer Olympics by the city of Baku and the National Olympic Committee of Azerbaijan. Bids were also placed by Doha, Istanbul, Madrid, Rome (which later cancelled its bid) and the chosen host city of Tokyo.
