Barbara Romaine (born 1959) is an academic and translator of Arabic literature. From 2008 to 2021 she taught in the Department of Global Interdisciplinary Studies at Villanova University, where she also edited a periodical, ''Writing in Tongues: A Global Interdisciplinary Journal''. Irving Howard Romaine (born 8 August 1972), previously incorrectly known as Irvine Romaine, is a Bermudian cricketer, who played with the Bermudian cricket team in their first ever One Day International when they played Canada on 17 May 2006. Romaine scored 25 runs as Bermuda won the game by three wickets under the Duckworth-Lewis method. He went on to score 110 runs in three ODIs in the tournament, followed by a century (the first in ODIs for Bermuda) in his fourth One-day International innings in August 2006. Suzanne Romaine (born 1951) is an American linguist known for work on historical linguistics and sociolinguistics. From 1984 to 2014 she was Merton Professor of English language at the University of Oxford. Background and career Romaine was born in Massachusetts in 1951, and received an A.B. William Romaine (1714 at Hartlepool – 1795), evangelical divine of the Church of England, was author of works once highly thought of by the evangelicals, the trilogy ''The Life, the Walk, and the Triumph of Faith''. Early life Romaine was born at Hartlepool, County Durham, on 25 September 1714 the son of a corn merchant of French Protestant descent. He was educated at Houghton-le-Spring Royal Kepier Grammar School and Christ Church, Oxford. Ministry Romaine was ordained as a deacon in 1736, and became curate of Loe Trenchard in Devon. He was ordained as a priest in December 1738, following which he became curate of Banstead in Surrey and Horton in Middlesex, holding both posts concurrently. In 1739 he became engaged in a bitter controversy over the views of William Warburton. Romaine Brooks (born Beatrice Romaine Goddard; May 1, 1874 – December 7, 1970) was an American painter who worked mostly in Paris and Capri. She specialized in portrait painting, portraiture and used a subdued tonal Palette (painting), palette keyed to the color gray. Brooks ignored contemporary artistic trends such as Cubism and Fauvism, drawing on her own original aesthetic inspired by the works of Charles Conder, Walter Sickert, and James McNeill Whistler. Her subjects ranged from anonymous models to titled aristocrats. She is best known for her images of women in androgynous or masculine dress, including her self-portrait of 1923, which is her most widely reproduced work. Romaine Henry "Ro" Foege (born September 1, 1938) was the Iowa State Representative from the 29th District, representing portions of Linn and Johnson Counties. He was in the Iowa House of Representatives 1996 to 2008. Foege was Director, Iowa Department on Aging 2010-2011. He was born in George, Lyon County, Iowa. He is the fourth of seven children born to Henry Foege, a Lutheran minister, and Frieda (Kruse) Foege. Romaine Fielding (born William Grant Blandin; May 22, 1867 – December 15, 1927) was an American actor, screenwriter, and silent film director known for his dramatic westerns. She first received national attention for her activism at the funeral of murdered gay student Matthew Shepard; the two became friends when Shepard moved to Casper, Wyoming to attend college. Romaine-la-Prophétesse
Romaine-la-Prophétesse (, Romaine the Prophetess), born Romaine Rivière around 1750 in Santo Domingo, was a free black coffee plantation owner and leader of an uprising early in the Haitian Revolution. In 1791, in response to rising racial tensions in Saint-Domingue and to an armed group gathered at a nearby plantation, Romaine and followers burned that plantation and others throughout southern Haiti, freeing thousands of enslaved people. Romaine identified as a prophetess and dressed as a woman once the uprising began, and may have been transgender or genderfluid. Romaine briefly governed the two main cities in southern Haiti, Léogâne and Jacmel.
