Roi Levi
Roi Yosef Levy (; 29 May 1979 – 7 October 2023) was an officer in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) with the rank of colonel who served in his last position as commander of the Multidimensional Unit. He had previously served as commander of the Fire Training Center in Melah, commander of the Bar'am Brigade, commander of the Unit 621 - 'Egoz', commander of the Hadar Battalion and commander of the 1st 'Golani' Brigade. He was killed in the battle of Re'im during an encounter with Palestinian militants during the 2023 Israel–Hamas war. Biography Levy was born in the United States and grew up in Jerusalem. He studied at the Yeshiva High School in Beit El and the Atarot Yerushalayim Yeshiva. He enlisted in the IDF in March 1999, was assigned to the 1st Brigade and was accepted into the Golani reconnaissance platoon. 2023 Israel–Hamas War Hostage Crisis
On 7 October 2023, as part of Operation Al-Aqsa Flood at the beginning of the 2023 Israel–Hamas war, Palestinian militants (led by Hamas) abducted around 250 people from Israel to the Gaza Strip with the stated goal of forcing Israel to release Palestinian prisoners. As of January 7, 2024, 110 hostages were returned alive to Israel, with 105 being released in a prisoner exchange deal, 4 were released by Hamas unilaterally and 1 hostage was rescued by the IDF. 27 hostages were reportedly killed in Hamas captivity according to Israel, 3 of the hostages were killed by friendly fire from the IDF and the bodies of 8 hostages were repatriated through a military operation – 136 remain in captivity in the Gaza Strip. Re'im Music Festival Massacre
On 7 October 2023, the Palestinian Islamist militant group Hamas initiated a surprise invasion of Israel from the Gaza Strip. As part of the attack, 364 civilians were killed and many more wounded by Hamas at the Supernova Sukkot Gathering, an open-air music festival celebrating the Jewish holiday of Sukkot near kibbutz Re'im. Yonatan Steinberg (; 1980 – 7 October 2023) was an officer in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) with the rank of colonel, who served as the commander of the 933rd "Nahal" Brigade. Asaf Hamami
Asaf Hamami ( he, אסף חממי. December 2, 1982 – October 7, 2023) was an IDF officer with the rank of colonel, serving as the commander of the Southern Brigade in the Gaza Strip. Prior to that, he served as the commander of the Negev Brigade, commander of the Oz Brigade training school, and commander of the Tzabar Battalion.
