Asaf Hamami
Asaf Hamami ( he, אסף חממי. December 2, 1982 – October 7, 2023) was an IDF officer with the rank of colonel, serving as the commander of the Southern Brigade in the Gaza Strip. Prior to that, he served as the commander of the Negev Brigade, commander of the Oz Brigade training school, and commander of the Tzabar Battalion. On October 7, 2023, during the battles of the Hamas-led attack on Israel, he was killed defending Kibbutz Nirim. His body was taken to Gaza by Hamas. Along with Roi Levy, Yonatan Steinberg and Yitzhak Ben-Bashat, they are the most senior officers killed in the IDF in this war. Eli Yitzhak Ben-Bashat ( he, עלי יצחק בן בשט; 1979 – 12 December 2023) was an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) officer with the rank of Colonel. He served as the commander of the Yiftach Brigade, the commander of the Paran Brigade, a team commander at the Tactical Command College, and the commander of the Golani Reconnaissance Battalion. 2023 Israel–Hamas War Hostage Crisis
On 7 October 2023, as part of Operation Al-Aqsa Flood at the beginning of the 2023 Israel–Hamas war, Palestinian militants (led by Hamas) abducted around 250 people from Israel to the Gaza Strip with the stated goal of forcing Israel to release Palestinian prisoners. As of January 7, 2024, 110 hostages were returned alive to Israel, with 105 being released in a prisoner exchange deal, 4 were released by Hamas unilaterally and 1 hostage was rescued by the IDF. 27 hostages were reportedly killed in Hamas captivity according to Israel, 3 of the hostages were killed by friendly fire from the IDF and the bodies of 8 hostages were repatriated through a military operation – 136 remain in captivity in the Gaza Strip. Nirim Attack
On 7 October 2023, a surprise assault was launched on Israel by Hamas militants coming from the Gaza Strip. One of their targets was Nirim, a kibbutz located in the southern part of Israel, about from the border with Gaza. At least five kibbutz civilians died, many were injured and an unknown number of civilians were kidnapped and taken hostage to Gaza. Yoav Gallant (; born 8 November 1958) is an Israeli politician and former military officer. A member of the Knesset for Likud, he has served as Minister of Defense since 2022.
