''Rogamar'' is the tenth album by Cesária Évora. The album reached the Polish Top 5 charts where it was number four, it was also number 17 in France, number 19 in Portugal, number 23 in Belgium's Wallonia and number 38 in Switzerland. The album is named after the colá song "Rogá mar" made by Teófilo Chantre, the song appears in the seventh track Chart performance The album reach the charts in several countries, particularly Europe. It was number 38 in Switzerland and from March 19, it remained in the Swiss charts for six weeks. Rogamar and some of her singles were also popular in Cape Verde, though Cape Verde did not have its music chart at the time. Cesária Évora
Cesária Évora GCIH (; 27 August 194117 December 2011), more commonly known as Cize, was a Cape Verdean singer-songwriter. She received a Grammy Award in 2004 for her album '' Voz d'Amor''. Nicknamed the "Barefoot Diva" for performing without shoes, she was known as the "Queen of Morna". Évora began singing as a young woman in bars in her hometown of Mindelo, and came to international prominence in the 1990s. Biography Early life Cesária Évora was born on 27 August 1941 in Mindelo, São Vicente, Cape Verde. When she was seven years old her father, Justino da Cruz Évora, who was a part-time musician, died, and at the age of ten she was placed in an orphanage, as her mother Dona Joana could not raise all six children. At the age of 16, she was persuaded by a friend to sing in a sailors' tavern. She grew up at the house in Mindelo which other singers used from the 1940s to the 1970s, at 35 Rua de Moeda. ''Voz d'Amor'' (Cape Verdean Creole for the ''Voice of Love'', Portuguese: ''Voz de Amor'') is the ninth album by Cesária Évora. The album reached number 3 in Poland, the first Cape Verdean and West African artist to reach the Polish Top 10 charts and number 2 in the Billboard 200 World Albums Chart. The album sold about 400,000 copies. In Switzerland, the album reached number 57 below the Top 50 charts in October and remained in the Swiss charts for six weeks. The album won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary World Music Album in 2004, the first to win from Cape Verde or a part of West Africa. The sixth song "Monte Cara" relates to a mountain west of Mindelo and the eleventh song of the album "Pomba" features the lyrics "Subi Somada, a bô di diante, a mi ditras" which relates to Assomada's feature being in the upper parts. Morna (music)
The morna (pronunciation in both Portuguese and Cape Verdean Creole: ) is a music and dance genre from Cape Verde. Lyrics are usually in Cape Verdean Creole, and instrumentation often includes cavaquinho, clarinet, accordion, violin, piano and guitar. Morna is widely considered the national music of Cape Verde, as is the fado for Portugal, the tango for Argentina, the merengue for Dominican Republic, the rumba for Cuba, and so on. The ''coladeira'' (; Cape Verdean Creole: ''koladera,'' ) is a music genre from the Cape Verde islands in the central Atlantic Ocean. It is characterized by a variable tempo, a 2-beat bar, and (in its most traditional form) a harmonic structure based in a cycle of fifths. The lyrics structure is organized in strophes that alternate with a refrain. The tone is generally joyful and themes often include social criticism. Instrumentation typically includes a guitar, a '' cavaquinho'', and percussion, among others. According to oral tradition, the genre originated in the 1930s when the composer Anton’ Tchitch’ intentionally speeded up the tempo of a '' morna.'' Teófilo Chantre (born 1964) is a Cape Verdean musician, first noted for his decades long collaboration with singer Cesaría Évora, and later for his own recordings. Life He was born on the island of São Nicolau, growing up with his grandparents on São Vicente Island after his parents left to find work in Europe, a common occurrence in the country. His father ended up in Rotterdam and his mother settled in Paris after a time in Hamburg. He moved to be with his mother at age 14, but he missed his grandparents, leading to an attachment to the concept of ''saudade'', the Portuguese word for longing and present in much Cabo Verde music. He learned the guitar at age 16 and continues to live in France. Career Chantre first became known for his work composing songs for Cape Verde singer Cesária Évora, who he met in Paris in the 1990s, after a concert both performed in.
