Cesária Évora GCIH (; 27 August 194117 December 2011), more commonly known as Cize, was a Cape Verdean singer-songwriter. She received a Grammy Award in 2004 for her album '' Voz d'Amor''. Nicknamed the "Barefoot Diva" for performing without shoes, she was known as the "Queen of Morna". Évora began singing as a young woman in bars in her hometown of Mindelo, and came to international prominence in the 1990s. Biography Early life Cesária Évora was born on 27 August 1941 in Mindelo, São Vicente, Cape Verde. When she was seven years old her father, Justino da Cruz Évora, who was a part-time musician, died, and at the age of ten she was placed in an orphanage, as her mother Dona Joana could not raise all six children. At the age of 16, she was persuaded by a friend to sing in a sailors' tavern. She grew up at the house in Mindelo which other singers used from the 1940s to the 1970s, at 35 Rua de Moeda. Morna (music)
The morna (pronunciation in both Portuguese and Cape Verdean Creole: ) is a music and dance genre from Cape Verde. Lyrics are usually in Cape Verdean Creole, and instrumentation often includes cavaquinho, clarinet, accordion, violin, piano and guitar. Morna is widely considered the national music of Cape Verde, as is the fado for Portugal, the tango for Argentina, the merengue for Dominican Republic, the rumba for Cuba, and so on. The best internationally known morna singer was Cesária Évora. Morna and other genres of Cape Verdean music are also played in Cape Verdean migrant communities abroad, especially in New England in the US, Portugal, the Netherlands, France, West Africa and parts of Latin America. The ''coladeira'' (; Cape Verdean Creole: ''koladera,'' ) is a music genre from the Cape Verde islands in the central Atlantic Ocean. It is characterized by a variable tempo, a 2-beat bar, and (in its most traditional form) a harmonic structure based in a cycle of fifths. The lyrics structure is organized in strophes that alternate with a refrain. The tone is generally joyful and themes often include social criticism. Instrumentation typically includes a guitar, a '' cavaquinho'', and percussion, among others. According to oral tradition, the genre originated in the 1930s when the composer Anton’ Tchitch’ intentionally speeded up the tempo of a '' morna.'' In the 1950s, it began to incorporate electronic influences, and beginning in the 1980s it was influenced by compas music from Haiti. The album reached the Polish Top 5 charts where it was number four, it was also number 17 in France, number 19 in Portugal, number 23 in Belgium's Wallonia and number 38 in Switzerland. The album is named after the colá song "Rogá mar" made by Teófilo Chantre, the song appears in the seventh track Chart performance The album reach the charts in several countries, particularly Europe. It was number 38 in Switzerland and from March 19, it remained in the Swiss charts for six weeks.
