Roberts Skadats
Roberts Skadats (1948) is a former Latvian football midfielder and forward who played with FK Daugava Rīga for most of his career. Playing biography After completing secondary education Skadats was offered to join Daugava - the top football team in Latvia - at the age of 18 years. His first season he spent with Daugava reserves where he was team leader. Skadats was unhappy with his position in Daugava and was close to leaving the team and joining Zvejnieks Liepāja but the team manager persuaded him that he was counting on Skadats as a future main squad player. And that he indeed became - not only he played 77 matches in 1969–1970 for Daugava but also scored 15 goals (in 1969 he proved that he could become a successor to the Daugava star veteran player - Gunārs Ulmanis and Georgijs Smirnovs). Laimonis Laizāns
Laimonis Laizāns (born 30 January, 1945, died 16 November, 2020) was a former Soviet Latvian football goalkeeper who played for FK Daugava Rīga and Torpedo Moscow. He is considered one of the best Latvian goalkeepers of all time. Playing biography Laizāns was still a school student when he was approached by famous Latvian football manager Vadims Ulbergs and offered him to start training in football. At first Laizāns played on field but he didn't have especial talents. That would change when for one game the team he played for had no goalkeeper and Laizāns was put in goal and since then he only played in goal, although he himself didn't like it at first because he wanted to score goals himself. As at that time most sportsmen in Latvia played both football and ice hockey until 1965 Laizāns played both and only then decided to devote his career entirely to football. The Latvian Football Cup () is the main Single-elimination tournament, knockout cup competition in Latvian Football (soccer), football. Since 2021, its full name is Responsible Game Latvian Football Cup (''Atbildīgas spēles Latvijas kauss'') due to the sponsorship by sports betting company William Hill (bookmaker), William Hill. The tournament was launched in 1937, replacing the previous knockout tournament – the Riga Football Cup. The competition is a knockout (single elimination) tournament. From 1937 to 2008 and again since 2017, all of the games of the tournament are played within the year. Ilmārs Liepiņš (1947–2007) was a Latvian football midfielder who played for 10 years for FK Daugava Rīga. Ilmārs Liepiņš came from a football family – his father Ēvalds Liepiņš was a striker for "Daugava" back in 1946-1948 and his brother Juris played for ESR-Enerģija – one of the strongest times in the Soviet Latvian league. Jānis Dreimanis
Jānis Dreimanis (born 13 October 1949, Riga) is a Latvian former football defender. In his career, he played 115 matches for Daugava Rīga, scoring four goals. Playing career Dreimanis' first steps in football were made with Darba Rezerves in Riga, where at the time worked the famous former Latvian footballer Alfons Jēgers. First senior club - Enerģija Rīga in the Latvian league, then he played for ASK Rīga for 2 years. In 1971, he joined Zvejnieks Liepāja, which played on a higher level than his previous teams - in the Soviet second league. In 1972, he got transferred to Daugava Rīga. His best season with Daugava was in 1974 when Daugava played in the second division playoffs, and Dreimanis had a strong shot and often scored goals from a far distance. Elektrons Rīga (also known as FK Alfa) was a Latvian football club from Riga that was one of the leading clubs in the Latvian league in the 1970s and 1980s. History Elektrons was founded somewhere in the 1960s (exact year has to be determined) as a football club with the Riga asphalt-concrete factory under the name RABR Rīga (''Rīgas asfaltbetona rūpnīca''). Its first season in the Latvian top league came in 1967 and brought a 5th-place finish and a Latvian Cup final in which it lost to Osta Ventspils. Georgijs Smirnovs
Georgijs Smirnovs (born 1936) is a Latvian former football player and manager. In 2006 Latvian Football Federation selected Smirnovs as one of the 11 greatest footballers in the first 100 years of football in Latvia. Biography Born in Leningrad, Smirnovs played football with a local factory club. In 1957 he was sent to Riga, Latvia for military service. He got to play with FK Dinamo Rīga with which he won the Latvian Cup and was noted by many as a very talented forward. After just six matches that he had played with Dinamo, Vadims Ulbergs from Daugava Rīga offered Smirnovs to join the strongest Latvian club. He made his debut with Daugava in the 1st Soviet league in the 1957 and played with the club until 1971.
