Elektrons
Elektrons Rīga (also known as FK Alfa) was a Latvian football club from Riga that was one of the leading clubs in the Latvian league in the 1970s and 1980s. History Elektrons was founded somewhere in the 1960s (exact year has to be determined) as a football club with the Riga asphalt-concrete factory under the name RABR Rīga (''Rīgas asfaltbetona rūpnīca''). Its first season in the Latvian top league came in 1967 and brought a 5th-place finish and a Latvian Cup final in which it lost to Osta Ventspils. In 1968 the club was renamed to Elektrons and it won the silver medals of the Latvian league, with 36 points they were a single point behind league winners Starts Brocēni. The next year Elektrons won its first Latvian Cup and had revenge over the club from Ventspils in the cup final. Latvian Cup
The Latvian Football Cup () is the main Single-elimination tournament, knockout cup competition in Latvian Football (soccer), football. Since 2021, its full name is Responsible Game Latvian Football Cup (''Atbildīgas spēles Latvijas kauss'') due to the sponsorship by sports betting company William Hill (bookmaker), William Hill. The tournament was launched in 1937, replacing the previous knockout tournament – the Riga Football Cup. The competition is a knockout (single elimination) tournament. From 1937 to 2008 and again since 2017, all of the games of the tournament are played within the year. During the Soviet occupation (Soviet occupation of Latvia in 1940, 1940–1941, Soviet occupation of the Baltic states (1944), 1944–1991) it served as a qualification tournament for the Soviet Cup. Roberts Skadats
Roberts Skadats (1948) is a former Latvian football midfielder and forward who played with FK Daugava Rīga for most of his career. Playing biography After completing secondary education Skadats was offered to join Daugava - the top football team in Latvia - at the age of 18 years. His first season he spent with Daugava reserves where he was team leader. Skadats was unhappy with his position in Daugava and was close to leaving the team and joining Zvejnieks Liepāja but the team manager persuaded him that he was counting on Skadats as a future main squad player. And that he indeed became - not only he played 77 matches in 1969–1970 for Daugava but also scored 15 goals (in 1969 he proved that he could become a successor to the Daugava star veteran player - Gunārs Ulmanis and Georgijs Smirnovs). Jurijs Andrejevs
Jurijs Andrejevs (born 16 January 1957 in Riga, Latvia, USSR) is a former footballer who is currently the sporting director of Latvian Football Federation. Previously he was the manager of the team but was released in 2008 after an unsuccessful season. He was the manager of Latvia national team from 2004 to 2007, having succeeded Aleksandrs Starkovs in December 2004. Club career Andrejevs played for a number of football clubs in Riga. He started his career with Daugava Rīga. He also played for FK Jūrnieks, Progress, Celtnieks Rīga, Alfa and Enerģija Rīga. He was champion with Soviet Latvia's football team FK Alfa in 1985. FK Venta Ventspils
FK Venta were a Latvian football club based in Ventspils. They were established in 1964 and went bankrupt in 2005. Club history The club was founded in 1964 as Naftas bāze, in its debut season in the Latvian league it finished 6th from 14 teams. In 1965 the club name was changed to Osta and it earned silver medals in the Latvian league. In 1967 Osta won the Latvian Cup 2:0 against Elektrons Rīga. In 1968 the club was renamed to – FK Venta, it reached the cup finals again in 1968 and 1969 but lost both times. In 1969 Venta won the first Latvian league title for Ventspils under Vladimirs Čikiņovs, a former FK Daugava Rīga footballer. Half of the 1969 league winners were local Ventspils footballers, while the others were from various places, mostly from Belarus. The Latvian First League ( lv, Latvijas Pirmā līga, 1. līga) is the second tier of football in Latvia and is organised by the Latvian Football Federation. History The league was founded together with other Latvian football competitions in 1992. Laimonis Laizāns
Laimonis Laizāns (born 30 January, 1945, died 16 November, 2020) was a former Soviet Latvian football goalkeeper who played for FK Daugava Rīga and Torpedo Moscow. He is considered one of the best Latvian goalkeepers of all time. Playing biography Laizāns was still a school student when he was approached by famous Latvian football manager Vadims Ulbergs and offered him to start training in football. At first Laizāns played on field but he didn't have especial talents. That would change when for one game the team he played for had no goalkeeper and Laizāns was put in goal and since then he only played in goal, although he himself didn't like it at first because he wanted to score goals himself. As at that time most sportsmen in Latvia played both football and ice hockey until 1965 Laizāns played both and only then decided to devote his career entirely to football.
