Robert McLeese
Robert McLeese (June 28, 1828 – March 27, 1898) was an Ireland, Irish-born hotel keeper, store owner, owner of a sternwheel river boat and political figure in British Columbia. He represented Cariboo (provincial electoral district), Cariboo in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia from 1882 to 1888. He was born near Coleraine in 1828, the son of John McLeese and Jennie McArthur, both of Scotland, Scottish descent, and was educated in Dublin. McLeese moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where some of his relative had already settled. After seven years there, he went to California via Panama. In 1858, McLeese came to British Columbia, settling at New Westminster, British Columbia, New Westminster. Five years later, he moved to the Cariboo District, settling at Soda Creek, British Columbia, Soda Creek. McLeese married Mary McLaren in 1873. New Westminster (colloquially known as New West) is a city in the Lower Mainland region of British Columbia, Canada, and a member municipality of the Metro Vancouver Regional District. McLeese Lake, British Columbia
McLeese Lake is an unincorporated community on British Columbia Highway 97 in the Cariboo region of the Central Interior of British Columbia, Canada. It is named for the lake of the same name, which itself was named for Robert McLeese, a pioneer storekeeper, hotelier and steamboat owner and also politician. McLeese Lake is home to the Gibraltar Mine, Canada's second-largest open pit copper mine, which is located approximately 10km north of town. John Evans (British Columbia Politician)
John Evans (January 25, 1816 – August 25, 1879) was a British-Canadian miner and political figure in British Columbia. He represented Cariboo in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia from 1875 to 1879. Early life Evans was born and raised in Machynlleth, Wales. He worked in Manchester as a young man and later moved to Tremadog with his family. Career Evans came to British Columbia in 1863 with a group of Welsh miners. The venture was unsuccessful but Evans remained, continuing to prospect for gold and also working as a mining and land surveyor. He ran unsuccessfully for a seat on the Legislative Council for the Colony of British Columbia in 1863 and 1865 and for a seat in the provincial assembly in 1871 before being elected in 1875. Evans was married three times: twice in Wales, first to Martha Evans in 1840 and then to Ann Thomas in 1842, and later to Catherine Jones in 1877 in Victoria. Soda Creek is a rural subdivision 38 km north of Williams Lake in British Columbia, Canada. Located on the east bank of the Fraser River, Soda Creek was originally the home of the Xat'sull First Nation. Soda Creek Indian Reserve No. 1 is located on the left (E) bank of the Fraser River, one mile south of the Soda Creek BCR (CN) station, 431.10 ha. Xat'sull means "on the cliff where the bubbling water comes out". European settlement began in the 1860s with the onset of the Cariboo Gold Rush and the building of the Old Cariboo Road. Cariboo District
Cariboo District was a federal electoral district in British Columbia, Canada, that was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1871 to 1872. It was created when the province of British Columbia joined Confederation in 1871. Like other ridings established in that year, a byelection was called to fill the seat until the general election of 1872. The riding constituted all of the Lillooet and Cariboo Land Districts (identical with the provincial electoral districts of those names at the time), meaning everything north and inland from Howe Sound and north of the Thompson River, all the way to the Yukon border excepting the Coast. Cariboo was one of the twelve original electoral districts created when British Columbia became a Canadian province in 1871. Roughly corresponding to the old colonial electoral administrative district of the same name, it was a three-member riding until the 1894 election, when it was reduced through reapportionment and became a two-member riding until the 1916 election, after which it has been a single-member riding.
