Riñihue, Chile
Riñihue () is a hamlet ( es, caserío) on the shores of Riñihue Lake, Los Ríos Region, Chile. It is located south of the mountain Tralcán in the western end of Riñihue Lake. In early 20th century Riñihue grew out as a settlement due to the exploitation of wood in Riñihue Lake. Riñihue was the first Chilean lakeshore settlement to be reached by the railroad. The hamlet was flooded in 1960 during the Riñihuazo The Riñihuazo is the name given to the landslide damming of Riñihue Lake on 22 May 1960, after a landslide caused by the Great Chilean earthquake blocked its outflow. Valdivia Province ( es, Provincia de Valdivia; ) is one of two provinces of the southern Chilean region of Los Ríos (XIV). The provincial capital is Valdivia. Los Lagos () is a Chilean city and commune in Valdivia Province, Los Ríos Region. Demographics According to the 2002 census of the National Statistics Institute, Los Lagos spans an area of and has 20,168 inhabitants (10,370 men and 9,798 women). Of these, 9,479 (47%) lived in urban areas and 10,689 (53%) in rural areas. The population grew by 8.6% (1,604 persons) between the 1992 and 2002 censuses. It has a large German presence, like the entire Los Rios and Los Lagos Regions. Riñihue Lake
The Riñihue Lake ( es, Lago Riñihue ) is a lake of glacial origin in eastern Valdivia Province, southern Chile. It is surrounded by several mountains. The eastern side receives the waters of the Panguipulli Lake by the Enco River, its main contributor. It is the last of the Seven Lakes chain. In the west it is cut into two arms by the Tralcán Mount, and on the east side lies the Mocho-Choshuenco volcano. In the south the lake is bounded by the Cerros de Quimán mountains. The lake's name derives from the Mapuche words ''rëngi'', "cane", and ''hue'', "place". In the 16th century the lake was known as Comohue, from ''co mu'', "with water", and ''hue'', "place". Tralcán
Tralcán ( mapudungun for ''thunder'') is a triangular-shaped mountain, which is located near Riñihue Lake, Chile. It is located south of the outflow dividing western Riñihue in two arms. Despite having been sacred to the huilliches for centuries, the mount became famous when several landslides near Tralcan dammed the Riñihue Lake after the 1960 Valdivia earthquake. The water levels in the lake rose more than 20 m and became a threat to the existence of Valdivia city. These events came to be known as The Riñihuazo ("El Riñihuazo" in Spanish). There is evidence that a similar landslide occurred after the 1575 Valdivia earthquake. Riñihuazo
The Riñihuazo is the name given to the landslide damming of Riñihue Lake on 22 May 1960, after a landslide caused by the Great Chilean earthquake blocked its outflow. According to the chronicler Mariño de Lobera a similar event occurred after the 1575 Valdivia earthquake. During the Great Chilean earthquake, several landslides near Tralcán Mountain blocked the outflow of Riñihue Lake at ().
