Pierre-Paul Riquet
Stele in Toulouse Cathedral Pierre-Paul Riquet, Baron de Bonrepos (29 June 1609 (some sources say 1604) – 4 October 1680) was the engineer and canal-builder responsible for the construction of the Canal du Midi. Background Paul Riquet was born in Béziers, Hérault, France, the eldest son of solicitor, state prosecutor and businessman Guillaume Riquet. As a youth, Riquet was only interested in mathematics and science. He married Catherine de Milhau at age 19. As a '' fermier général'' ("farmer-general") of Languedoc-Roussillon, he was a tax farmer responsible for the collection and administration of the gabelle (salt tax) in Languedoc. He was appointed collector in 1630, and was also a munitions provider to the Catalan Army. Riquet became wealthy and was given permission by the King to levy his own taxes. Riquet () is a station of the Paris Métro and located in the 19th arrondissement of Paris. History Riquet opened on 5 November 1910 with the commissioning of the first section of line 7 between Opéra and Porte de la Villette with service provided by all trains on the line until 18 January 1911, when a branch opened from Louis Blanc to Pré-Saint-Gervais, resulting in 1 of every 2 trains serving this branch. It was once again served by all trains on the line when the branch from Louis Blanc to Pré-Saint-Gervais was split to form an independent line, line 7bis, on 3 December 1967. As part of the ''Un métro + beau'' programme by the RATP, the station was renovated and modernised on 28 January 2003. It was named after French engineer Pierre-Paul Riquet (born Béziers, 1609; died Toulouse, 1680), who conceived and carried out the construction of the Canal du Midi from 1666. Dominique Riquet (born 18 September 1946 in Valenciennes, Nord) is a French surgeon and politician of the Radical Party who has been serving as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) since the 2009 European election, representing the North-West constituency. From 2002 until 2012, he was also the mayor of Valenciennes. Political career In 2009, the Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) selected him to lead the party's list in the North-West constituency ahead of the 2009 European elections. His list won 24.22% and he was easily elected to the European Parliament. In his first parliamentary term from 2009 until 2014, Riquet was a member of the European People's Party group. François-Joseph-Philippe de Riquet (21 September 1771 - 2 March 1843), comte de Caraman was the 16th Prince de Chimay from 24 July 1804 to 1843. Early life François-Joseph-Philippe was born in Paris on 21 September 1771. He was a son of Victor Maurice de Riquet de Caraman-Chimay and Marie Anne Gabrielle Josephe Francoise Xaviere de Henin-Liétard. Career During the French Revolution, he emigrated but came back during the First French Empire, and received the title of ''chef de cohorte'' from Napoleon I of France, Napoleon. He became the sixteenth Prince of Chimay after the death of his childless uncle in 1804, inheriting the Chimay estates (now in Belgium). Marie-''Joseph''-Guy-Henry-Philippe de Riquet de Caraman, 18th Prince de Chimay (9 October 1836, Château de Menars, France – 29 March 1892, Brussels, Belgium), was a Belgian diplomat and politician. He was notable as Ambassador to the Holy See (1846-1847), governor of the province of Hainaut (1870-1878) and Foreign Minister of Belgium (1884-1892). Life His parents were Joseph de Riquet de Caraman, 17th Prince de Chimay, and Émilie Pellapra. His own six children included Joseph, Prince de Caraman-Chimay, Prince Alexandre (who married Mathilde Stuyvesant), and Élisabeth (who married the Count of Greffulhe). He also gave private concerts, with him on violin and his wife on piano. Marie-Clotilde-Elisabeth Louise de Riquet (3 June 1837 – 8 November 1890) was a Belgian pianist. She was the eldest daughter of Michel Gabriel Alphonse Ferdinand de Riquet (1810–1865), created prince de Chimay 1834, for himself only, and Rosalie de Riquet de Caraman (1814–1872) Life In childhood she developed considerable aptitude as a pianist. On 11 April 1860 she married Eugène Arnould Henri Charles François Marie, comte de Mercy-Argenteau (22 August 1838 – 2 May 1888). She met Franz Liszt the next year. In 1866, she met emperor Napoleon III and befriended him. After his defeat at the Battle of Sedan, she visited him for a last time when he was a prisoner of the Prussians at Schloss Wilhelmshöhe and consoled him playing music.
