Rik Kuypers
Rik Kuypers (11 April 1925 – 21 May 2019) was a Belgian film director. He directed 29 films between 1947 and 1981. He co-directed the film ''Seagulls Die in the Harbour'', which was entered into the 1956 Cannes Film Festival. Mortsel
Mortsel () is a city and municipality close to the city of Antwerp located in the Belgian province of Antwerp. The municipality only comprises the city of Mortsel proper. In 2021, Mortsel had a total population of 26,170 people. The total area is 7.78 km². Geography The city consists of the areas Mortsel-Dorp, Oude-God and Luithagen. Mortsel is bordered by Antwerp (districts Wilrijk, Berchem and Deurne), Borsbeek, Boechout, Hove, and Edegem. History Mortsel was the scene for one of the major collateral damage tragedies of World War II. On 5 April 1943, the Minerva car factory, then used to repair Luftwaffe planes, was the target of a bombing raid by the USAAF. Most bombs missed the target and hit a residential area instead, resulting in the deaths of 936 civilians, including 209 children, exceeding the civilian death toll of the Guernica raid which modern estimates put at 400. ''Seagulls Die in the Harbour'' ( nl, Meeuwen sterven in de haven) is a 1955 Belgian drama film directed by Rik Kuypers, Ivo Michiels and Roland Verhavert, for which Jack Sels wrote the soundtrack. The film was entered into the 1956 Cannes Film Festival. Plot A man ( Julien Schoenaerts, Matthias Schoenaerts’s father) is seen wandering around in Antwerp, avoiding all contact with other people. He is penniless and desperately wants to leave the country, but can't pay for his enshipment. The only people who like him are the boatman's wife (Tine Balder), a prostitute (Dora van der Groen) and a little orphan girl called Gigi (Gisèle Peeters). Gradually but surely it becomes clear why he is hiding and why he needs to flee. 1956 Cannes Film Festival
The 9th Cannes Film Festival was held from 23 April to 10 May 1956. The Palme d'Or went to ''The Silent World'' by Jacques-Yves Cousteau and Louis Malle. The festival opened with ''Marie-Antoinette reine de France'', directed by Jean Delannoy and closed with ''Il tetto'' by Vittorio De Sica. In an effort to resolve some issues caused by the Cold War climate of the time, like special treatment towards Americans (who gave financial assistance to the festival) which displeased the Eastern Bloc, a decision to have films withdrawn under certain conditions had been put in place. This decision in turn had become a divisive issue in the festival, as it was seen as censorship. In 1956 it was decided to eliminate all such censorship from the selection and thereby start a new era in the festival.
