Rijeka Railway Station
The Rijeka railway station ( Croatian: ''Željeznički kolodvor Rijeka'') opened in 1873 and is close to the port of Rijeka. It is operated by Croatian Railways (HŽ). History Following the Croatian–Hungarian Settlement of 1868 the Free State of Fiume was given a special status in Croatia's personal union with Hungary, as well as forcing the expansion of the Port of Rijeka in the form of making it the main commercial port of the Kingdom of Hungary. In the year of 1873 the railway routes coming from Budapest via Zagreb and Karlovac as well as from Vienna via Ljubljana & Pivka to Rijeka were finished and the station was opened on the 25 June 1873. A year later a direct rail connection to Trieste was established. In 1882 one of Europe's first oil refineries was founded in Rijeka, and during the 1880s the port and station were expanded with new warehouses. The Rijeka–Šapjane−State border railway, officially designated the M203 railway is a long, single-tracked railway line in Croatia, which is operated by HŽ Infrastruktura. M203 connects Rijeka to the Slovene railway network north of Šapjane and to the Zagreb via M202 east of Rijeka. Trams In Rijeka
Tram traffic in Rijeka was introduced in 1899. The first electric tram appeared on the streets of Rijeka on November 7, 1899, replacing horse-drawn vehicles, and thus marking the beginning of organised public transport in the town. A single-track line that was 4,400 metres long carried passengers from the bridge on Rječina to the Railway Station. Each of the eight existing trams could take twenty-eight passengers. In 1907, the tram started to run also from Školjić to the place where today’s shipyard "3. maj" is, while three years later it went all the way to Kantrida. In 1921, the double-track line was finished. During the Second World War it was the only means of public transport in the town. After the war new buses were acquired and they gradually took over the public transport in the town. Ferenc Pfaff (born as Franz Pfaff, Mohács, 19 November 1851 – Budapest, 21 August 1913) was a Hungarian architect and academic. Career Pfaff received his degree in 1880 after studying under Imre Steindl at the József Nádor Technical University in Budapest. Early in his career, he designed a number of smaller buildings, among which is the Roman Catholic church at Svábhegy. However, he is best known for his career as an architect with the Hungarian Railways. Joining in 1887, he later became director of building works right across the Hungarian lands within the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In the following two decades he would design some 20 large, and numerous smaller railway stations, mainly in the Renaissance eclectic style.
