Rift Trooper
''Rift Trooper'' is a 1976 two player board wargame designed by Richard Bartucci and published by Attack Wargaming Association (AWA). It includes three tactical simulations of the science fiction novel ''Starship Troopers;'' "Squad Sweep", "Operation Royalty", and "Encounter". Gameplay ''Rift Trooper'' is played on a hex map, with the map design and alien enemies dependant on the simulation. For each scenario, one player plays as a team of Terran Mobile Infantry and the other as one of three different alien races—humanoids known as Skinnies, arachnid monsters called Bugs, or reptilian warriors known as Thoarks. Each soldier has a separate range, attack factor, defence factor and movement capability depending on their equipment. War Game
A wargame is a strategy game in which two or more players command opposing armed forces in a realistic simulation of an armed conflict. Wargaming may be played for recreation, to train military officers in the art of strategic thinking, or to study the nature of potential conflicts. Many wargames recreate specific historic battles, and can cover either whole wars, or any campaigns, battles, or lower-level engagements within them. Many simulate land combat, but there are wargames for naval and air combat as well. Generally, activities where the participants actually perform mock combat actions (e.g. friendly warships firing dummy rounds at each other) are not considered wargames. A board wargame is a wargame with a set playing surface or board, as opposed to being played on a computer or in a more free-form playing area as in miniatures games. The modern, commercial wargaming hobby (as distinct from military exercises, or war games) developed in 1954 following the publication and commercial success of ''Tactics''.. ''The Playboy Winner's Guide to Board Games'' is a 1979 book by Jon Freeman. It is a revised edition of ''A Player's Guide to Table Games'' by the same author, but under the name John Jackson. Contents ''The Playboy Winner's Guide to Board Games'' is a book of tips on strategies for winning board games. There are 11 chapters; the first seven cover various sorts of board games, the last chapter is a discussion of role-playing games. Hex Map
A hex map, hex board, or hex grid is a game board design commonly used in wargames of all scales. The map is subdivided into a hexagonal tiling, small regular hexagons of identical size. Advantages and disadvantages The primary advantage of a hex map over a traditional square grid map is that the distance between the center of each and every pair of adjacent hex cells (or ''hex'') is the same. By comparison, in a square grid map, the distance from the center of each square cell to the center of the four diagonal adjacent cells it shares a corner with is times that of the distance to the center of the four adjacent cells it shares an edge with. This equidistant property of all adjacent hexes is desirable for games in which the measurement of movement is a factor. Metagaming Concepts, later known simply as Metagaming, was a company that published board games from 1974 to 1983. It was founded and owned by Howard Thompson, who designed the company's first game, ''Stellar Conquest''. The company also invented Microgames and published Steve Jackson's first designs, including ''Ogre'', '' G.E.V.'' and ''The Fantasy Trip''. Richard Berg
Richard Harvey Berg (1943 – July 26, 2019) was a prolific American wargame designer. He was inducted into the Charles Roberts Awards Hall of Fame in 1987. Early life, army, student and lawyer Richard Berg was born in New York City. At age 21, he entered the United States Army, and served from 1967 to 1969, where he was assigned to be the musical director of the Army Theater in Frankfurt, West Germany. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Union College in Schenectady, New York, majoring in Asian History, and then earned a Juris Doctor from Brooklyn Law School. From 1971 to 1988, he worked as a criminal defense attorney in private practice and for the Legal Aid Society. He also worked as a media communications consultant, actor, director, author, lyricist, and composer, as well as working briefly for the Internal Revenue Service. ''Moves'' was a wargaming magazine originally published by Simulations Publications, SPI (Simulations Publications, Inc.), who also published manual wargames. Their flagship magazine ''Strategy & Tactics'' (''S&T''), was a military history magazine featuring a new wargame in each issue. While S&T was devoted to historical articles, ''Moves'' focused on the play of the games. Each issue carried articles dealing with strategies for different wargames, tactical tips, and many variants and scenarios for existing games.
